Puppy Linux does Rosegarden & Qsampler & Audacity & Jack work?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Puppy Linux does Rosegarden & Qsampler & Audacity & Jack work?

Post by Anders »

I'm thinking of using Puppy Linux for music production.

Will Rosegarde, Qsampler (LinuxSampler), Audacity & jack work with Puppy Linux?

I read that Puppy Linux will install deb packages, but it was not stated how. Will the deb packages work? How does one install them on puppy linux?

There was the puppy studio OS, but I tried to run it live from a usb and it didnt work.

So has anyone used Puppy Linux for music production and used any og the software mentioned?

Many Puppy variants, currently, 'bionic' ubuntu repo is used by some puppy based releases.
Puppy has it's own package manager, which has search functions,
so what can be found in those default repos
should be avaialble. The package manager will display if any libs
or dependencies are unavailable.

Testing/using is as simples as burning a boot CD
from a puppy iso, at first shutdown, you get asked if you want to make
a system storage 'save-file', a squash filesystem, choose encrypted or not,
a cutom name if desired, and a default size, 4 gig is a common default limit,
but it's resizable at any reboot you so choose.
The save-file will hold your system mods, data, recordings etc ...and can be enlarged
to meet your needs. There is a choice of size enlargements, and the resize utility
makes a text file in the root folder (C:\ or / ) to enact the resize at the next boot,

I have a few save-files over 100 gig, for use with windows vst plugins.
These took multiple reboot-resize operations,
as the resize has a limit, 16 or more gig in some cases, 4 or 8 in others.

squash files can be mounted and content adjusted normally, if desired.

The above is called 'frugal install' in puppyspeak. If you are happy with your tests,
there is also a full install available.

Studio 1337 is a commercial puppy distro, with audio/video apps
compiled on a custom RT kernel, with jackd configured, and many linux audio apps
are in a popup panel and the main menus. The iso is $50, and a bargain if you have any
sense of valuation on your free time to record music. A new release announcement, and links
are at https://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopi ... 59&t=20245

You can put a puppy distro on a usbstick, formated, with the boot flag enabled,
(gparted app lets you do this, after formatting)
and use unetbootin
or similar utility to get the iso on the usbstick in proper form.
Older puppy releases may not have been in 'hybrid' format, which now
allows that process.

There is also a free Music2go-Artdul puppy distro worth checking out, and puppy discussions at
