Upgrade UbuntuStudio 16.04 to 18.04 repositories?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Upgrade UbuntuStudio 16.04 to 18.04 repositories?

Post by baconature »

Hi,
I upgraded the old system, Ubuntustudio 16.04 to 18.04. The process disabled all the kxstudio repositories. I am unsure how to or if I can bring them back to life as is. It also appears that all the individual PPA names were changed or maybe just a labeling issue in the list. I don't know that triggering them back to on is the right thing to do, or if I should delete the entire list individually then add them all again. Ignorance is not always blissful. I don't know how to deal with this issue, having never done an actual automated upgrade prior. I've always done a fresh install in the past, so this issue or non issue never occurred.

A few words could ease my mind as to this. I am simply ignorant.

Well thanks.

What do you mean with disabled? Are they removed from the source list? Don't think it's a problem.

Here it is written that for ubuntu 18 you also need to enable gcc5 packages.

Clarification of nomenclature in the repository list. Here I am referencing the "Other Software" tab in the Software & Updates popup window of Synaptic Package Manager.
formerly it showed example:
This was changed to two text lines:
disabled on upgrade to bionic bionic
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debia ... dio/ubuntu

This has the box to check centered horizontally between the two lines, at the far left (normal place).

All of the kxstudio repository entries listed are currently listed in this manner.

Looks like they where disabled automatically before the upgrade. Can you enable them? Or delete them and add them again following the instructions on the kxstudio website?

I suppose I can delete them all and re introduce them, via the codes supplied by the kxstudio repository url, but if they don't work, why would I go to the trouble, that is why I ask. There is no mention of flavor 18.04 on the website, and again that is why I ask. Then still I could just as well re check all those disabled and see what happens, yet to me that is a risky thing for me to try. I don't know that it would be different, correct, or incorrect. I don't understand the methods hidden away in the background, pretty much at all, thus caution is due. It is quite obvious that this was done as a part of the upgrade procedure. Yet I don't know why, or if the kxstudio repositories don't work with 18.04 after upgrading. I don't know these things at all.

Thanks for reading and commenting, the commenting is very much appreciated. Eventually it will come clear, I hope!

They do work. Do as lilith says and follow all the instructions on the website, it does indeed mention 18.

It's adviced to deactivate foreign repos when distro upgrading, so I assume Ubuntu did this automatically. That has nothing to do with compatibility and kx should work fine with Ubuntu 18.

I had several successful dist-upgrades - from Debian-9 to Debian-10 with the KXStudio repositories installed (If you're using a system newer or equal to Debian 9 (Stretch) or Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) you'll also need to enable GCC5 packages.) - made on my computers, description: see signature.

Well I shall then go through the process of delete and then re-add. I appreciate the posts. It does increase my understanding as to how some things function.

Thank you all!

The thing with ppas being disabled upon an upgrade is weird and annoying but it makes sense logically. I do remember having this issue as well now you mention it, it is easy to fix but a bit of a pain when you have quite a few.

I didn't have to disable PPA when I dist-upgraded from Debian-9 to Debian-10 with the KXStudio repositories.

Might be an Ubuntu thing then, it disables them automatically when you upgrade.

Thank you all!
Just follow the instruction from the KXStudio website again: https://kx.studio/Repositories. That's it. :)

NOTE from KXStudio webpage:
Please do not copy these instructions to your own website, wiki, etc.
The packages file link might change at anytime, and so the instructions themselves.
Always refer to this exact page for how-to enable the KXStudio repositories please.
