What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Don't know about best, but lmms is common, works and easy to setup. Launch and start composing. It doesn't even need jack, but can work also with it if wanted.

I like LMMS to notate (mouse clicks). With midi keyboard i like to work with Ardour.
And there are many other DAWs who also do good. Try some. Find your own favourites.

It depends on what you do. I would suggest a sequencer, so MuseScore (if you use notation), MusE (if you only use MIDI) or QSynth (any other case).
