The problem
I can only use the laptop's speaker out port if I do the following:
- In alsamixer, enable auto-mute.
- Put the plug in halfway.
- Disable auto-mute.
- Push the plug in the rest of the way.
If I close and restart audacity, I have to go through the dance again.
Some context
KDE, Ubuntu 17.10. I recently started switching (using Cadence) between my laptop's internal audio interface and an external one. I did some work in Ardour over the last few days. I tried to get Claudia working but it could not restore my saved studios[1]. For a while every time I rebooted I would get 9 Claudia instances, and maybe 25 little windows saying something crashed if I force-restarted Cadence.

Maybe you're using the wrong model for your codec?
