Cadence opens, won't run

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Cadence opens, won't run

Post by Jeff Brown »

Nothing on the System page of Cadence responds when I click on it. I tried futzing around in the Tweaks page, but I can't even tell if I'm having an effect.

I'm running KUbuntu 16.04 on a Lenovo ThinkPad E545. I just apt-installed a bunch of stuff from KXStudio[1], particularly kxstudio-meta-all, pulsaudio-module-jack, kmix and kxstudio-default-settings (in that order).

I used to use qjackctl, and I still can -- but if I do that, I don't really get realtime audio; I get slowdowns and glitches, which is the reason I'm trying KXStudio.

Sweet, thanks!

I ran Kubuntu's "Discover" manager for updates, and rebooted, and now I can click on *some* of the System page. I was able to set the ALSA bridge to "ALSA -> PulseAudio -> JACK (Plugin)", per your advice in an earlier thread[1]. And I can click Configure to open the JACK Settings window, where I've selected Realtime.

But I can't get Jack to start. I can click Force Restart, and it reports success after a while (and after a notification indicates something crashed, which I can post a screenshot of if you think it's interesting (I would upload it to Github)). I see the JACK icon in the KDE toolbar, and can click "Start" from there too, but it doesn't start.

Do I need to switch my version of jackd? I have both jackd and jackd2 installed. I don't know how to read this, but here is, supposedly[1], enough information to deduce the repository that it came from:

Code: Select all

jeff@jbb-lenovo:~/code/Tidal$ apt-cache showpkg jackd
Package: jackd
Versions:
5 (/var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_xenial_universe_binary-amd64_Packages) (/var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_xenial_universe_binary-i386_Packages) (/var/lib/dpkg/status)

                  MD5: 43e39fc581e16852c662fc98fa2d411f
...
And if it helps, here's the same for jackd2. (First I used dpkg to determine that I'm using version 1.9.10+20150825git1ed50c92~dfsg-1ubuntu1.)

Now Cadence works! But I'm still getting audio glitches of the kind I was hoping would vanish if I had true realtime support, and I don't think I got the version of jackd2 you were hoping for.

The glitches arise when I use TidalCycles, an app that controls SuperCollider via OSC. I just start some loops and wait for a while, and eventually they stutter, even though my CPU utilization (according to top) never rises above 20%.

Regarding the jackd2 version:

Code: Select all

jeff@jbb-lenovo:~$ dpkg -s jackd2

I recently bought a new Dell laptop that might work better than this 3-year-old Lenovo -- I think it uses more standard hardware, and certainly more mainstream chips. I was expecting to use the Lenovo for music and the Dell for work, but I could try this on the Dell too. I've only been putting that off because installing SuperCollider (Tidal requires installing it from source, and then installing some "quarks", add-ons for SuperCollider, also from source) was hard.

Such tantalizing progress! Thanks for your help! And Cadence is a gorgeous application.

Indeed, I had done what you said. Thanks for bearing with me.

Today I used apt-cache policy to show me which repo it was using for jackd2, it said I didn't have it installed. That seemed bad, so I ran "apt purge jackd2" and then installed it again, and this time it seems to have used the desired repo:

Code: Select all

jeff@jbb-lenovo:~$ apt-cache policy jackd2
jackd2:
  Installed: 2:1.9.12-1~xenial1
  Candidate: 2:1.9.12-1~xenial1
  Version table:
 *** 2:1.9.12-1~xenial1 500
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debian/ubuntus/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     2:1.9.12-1~kxstudio1v5 500
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-debian/gcc5/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages
...
However, after rebooting, now Cadence is back to being unable to start JACK. (I can still use qjackctl.) Cadence said to check the logs; here are those:

Maybe stupidly, when I purged the old jackd2, it told me it was going to uninstall some other things, and I didn't write them down. I've still got these, though:
  • pulseaudio-module-jack
    kmix
    kxstudio-default-settings
    kxstudio-meta-all
    jackd
When I run "apt upgrade" or "apt dist-upgrade" it finds nothing to do.

Aha! Thanks, I didn't know I had to do that.

Yesterday I tried the other computer, and I'm *so close* to having that working:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=17970&p=88838#p88838

Maybe I'll get it set up on both of them :D
