ubuntu studio 16.04 + kxstudio video and audio won't play

I'm having a new weird problem.

I'm running Ubuntu Studio 16.04 with the kxstudio repos. I installed the repos per these instructions: https://freedompenguin.com/articles/how ... ll-o-rama/

Things were going along ok but now when I start jack, whether through qjackctl or cadence, no video or audio file will play in anything. No youtube in firefox, nothing plays through parole, vlc or any other daw or player. In short, any video or audio freezes when you try to play it. just stays frozen at the start.

This isn't an issue if I don't start jack.

The only additional packages I installed were vlc and cadence.

Unfortunately it was already installed and the bridge was started. I also tried changing the ALSA Bridge to ALSA>Pulseaudio>JACK but that didn't change anything.

It's this way in any daw as well. no audio samples will play. Audio and video will just freeze at the very start and do nothing. Not even a click or a frame of video appears.

The outputs of the jack and a2j logs look normal as far as I can tell

I'm thinking this is related to the midi issue I'm having in this post. Not sure why, but they did happen around the same time and I
m beginning to think it has something to do with the kxstudio repos:
