What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

KXStudio in Linux Mint

Post by chalee »

As a little community-project we integrated KXStudio in Linux Mint with Mate.
It's really stable and comes with some own improvements and designs, calling "Qiana Studio"!

Following the first release Maya Studio 13.07 (32bit) in a stable version for ALL machines, Qiana Studio comes in 64bit with the newest features of Linux Mint 17.3 and brings it together with the KXStudio-Repos for modern hardware.

So Qiana Studio is not really an own distribution, as more a modified Linux Mint 17 with integrated KXStudio-Repos and own improvements and ads.

The main intention of Qiana Studio is to give people who love Linux Mint (with MATE as the favourite desktop) an easy and stable entrance to the great world of making music, art, video and graphics with Linux (Mint), KXStudio and some more!

For professional audio-support pulseaudio was removed and replaced with Alsa/Jack.

Bitwig Studio 1.3.15 with usable "Demo-Mode" is "on board" to use it live, as a dj-software or just to test it!

(just saving/export-options are disabled)

Also Bitwig gave 100 licences to QStudio64-users for Bitwig 8-track: https://www.bitwig.com/en/8-track

What a cool project! MATE is a really a great DE for straddling bling, stability, and ease of tweaking (love being able to switch off compositing so easily in the GUI among other things) in a medium weight desktop. Looking forward to trying Qiana Studio out.

Oh wow! This is fantastic, I've been fiddling around for a while trying to find the right "home" for those wonderful KXStudio programs and plugins, and have only just settled on Linux Mint 17.3. I went though Ubuntu Studio, Unutu 16.04 LTS and Debian 8.4 but found one reason or other to not settle in. I finally decided that I like Mint 17.3 best and have been working on getting as much of the KX Repos integrated into my install with 4.4.0-22 lowlatency kernel as possible without compromising the system or breaking anything with my Bitwig/Renoise/Ardour goodness. I'm going to crack open a freshly wiped SSD to intall this new Qiana Distro on the side and see if it suits me better than "rolling my own". Thanks for the opportunity.

Thanx for feedback!

@ CV-Out: It's recommend to use the same lowlatency-kernel-revision like the original-distribution was made for.
So for Linux Mint 17.3 it's better to take the lowlatency-kernel 3.19.0-32.

Only if you have unsupported hardware and/or problems with the old kernel it's recommend to try a newer one.
But it can break every system and is a little experimental and better for advanced users.

If it works for you it should not mean that it works for others too.

For maximum stability we choosed lowlatency-kernel 3.19.0-32 in Qiana Studio.

Of course,- if you have a stable Linux Mint 17.3 with KXStudio-Repos incl. and the newer kernel works for you there is no big need to switch to QS.

[EDIT: QStudio64 uses Kernel 4.4.0-57 lowlatency and higher since version SX/XT - because of "Dirty Cow"!]

For beginners (or if you have to re-install your system) QS it's just great, because you have not to install or configure much after first install.

And QS is some more than KXStudio-Repos..:

Own design, improvements, more apps - specially for video-and photo-artwork and some more sound-tools..

It's a completly pre-configured and stable A/V-system- ready to make music and art- usable as a live system on usb-stick too.!

Also it's recommend to use the last version of Qiana Studio! We did some bugfixes and made some improvements the last weeks and the "Second Edition" (SE) of QStudio64 is a completly new build, with Bitwig Studio 1.3.11 and some new U-HE Plugins inside..

You checked it out?

Hi Chalee,

this is a great project for sure.
I'd like to set up my own "Mint 17.3 Studio" with a more lightweight DE (XFCE), adding just a bunch of needed programs (Ardour, Mixxx, Audacity, Hydrogen, Rakarrack, & Calf plugins suite).

Am I right in saying that the essentials for the set up are the following?
1) add Kernel Linux 3.19.0-32-lowlatency x86_64
2) add user to group “audio”
3) tweak the file /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf with the parameters suggested by Jack
4) Disable PulseAudio and install/config Jack

Referring to the points 3) and 4), are the instructions of the wiki page UbuntuStudioPreparation still valid/correct?

Thanks for your help & keep up good work!

Better this priority:

1) add Kernel Linux 3.19.0-32-lowlatency x86_64

2) UNINSTALL/PURGE Pulseaudio (and its dependencies)

3) Add KXStudio-Repositories

4) Install all KXStudio-meta's (or select what you need)

5) Install kxstudio-default-settings package
(it will handle /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf for you!)

6) add user to group “audio”

Maybe as a hat-tip, it should be named something like KianaX Studio?

There is no need to upgrade previos QS.

It’s just recommend to make a kernel-upgrade via synaptic to:
Kernel Linux 4.4.0-57-lowlatency x86_64 or higher (with headers,image,uefi-image)

-if you use old QStudio64 OS or SE version!

Easy.

The SX-version has the same technical base like OS/SE!
And ALL versions are really stable and well tested.

Just because of some security-issues the kernel-upgrade is necesarry and recommend.
And was the main reason to make a new release (for all coming users).

Also our releases are something like "snapshots" where we put new improvements and bugfixes
that are not possible to get with the updater!

Most changes are well documentated - so that everybody is able to "upgrade" without reinstall!

Latest Bitwig 8track/DEMO/Studio you have to download from bitwig.com .

Some new designs and manuals will not really worthy to make a new install - so enjoy QS.

Updated bug-fix release:

QStudio64 17.3 XT

http://qianastudio.tumblr.com/

http://mayastudio.tumblr.com/64bit

--------------------------------
CHANGES LOG (XT)
-------------------------------

25y-LINUX-JUBILEE-EDIT (eXTended)

- Kernel Linux 4.4.0-59-lowlatency x86_64

- Ardour 5.5

- harvid (http ardour video server)

- fixed keyring-issue

Users of QStudio64 OS/SE/SX don't need to reinstall!

-> just (upgrade kernel), reset your keyring and upgrade Ardour:

Keyrings Password-Reset:

In SE/SX the keyring-passphrase is the same like the live-system pw:

To prevent password-issues, reset the keyrings passphrase:

Type in terminal:

Code: Select all

rm /home/USER/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring
rm /home/USER/.local/share/keyrings/user.keystore
(Write your given user-name instead of “USER”!)

Restart the computer!

Now the keyring got the same pw that you choosed for system.

ARDOUR-UPGRADE: Ardour 5.5.x is available through KXRepos now!

Users of QStudio64 OS /SE /SX should upgrade via Synaptic.

During first start it will copy and backup all your old project files.

(For older and slower machines we recommend version 3 or 4.7.)

Check also the great Ardour-Manual: http://manual.ardour.org/

We wrote two little manuals to get bluetooth working with ALSA or Pulseaudio:

and how to make a streaming server with mixxx and icecast2:

Hello Linuxmusicians-community!
It's been a long time gone with "Qiana Studio" and the LTS-period is over since May 2019!

So we fixed and changed our project-/blog-&distroname to "QStudio64" to have one staying domain in the future ( just the revision-number e.g. 19.1 shows the Linux Mint-base & version now) and made a NEW RELEASE:

https://qstudio64.tumblr.com/

..for all that love KXStudio, Linux Mint, MATE and multimedia. :)

The actual release is basing on Linux Mint 19.1, MATE, 64bit and as LTS-version it gets updates untill 2023.

BIG THANX to falkTX (KXStudio) and Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint) for giving us this stable base.

Enjoy!
