What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Can you share the configs and/or patches used for the advertised "hyper lowlatency realtime kernel"?

That would make things less obscure for people looking for a commercial solution, and make room for improvement, maybe (though my real intention is to know if there is any real difference between your kernel and mine).

Thanks!

there was quite a history with him and this forum...
Ya, like when he made that comparison video. He could be confrontational sometimes, that's for sure. I think he also insulted the mods as biased, too.

Be surprised if he shows his face around here again!

But some people seem to like his distro. At least, that's what I hear.

My main question with a distro like this is:

What kind of hardware do I need to get my latency down to 0.7 ms? The laptop I use for live stuff probably won't cut it, but I'm interested to see what kind of hardware this occurs on.

If it is reasonably close, I'd invest in it for live use/rehearsal.
Think like a gun.

I have the older version, and to me, a more important advantage than latency,
is being able to use some plugins and sounds, noted for both great sound, and demanding cpu usage,
without needing to buy new hardware, and the latest commercial OS.
It's easy to use zynaddsubfx and rakarrack instances to get a great sound,
if the cpu can handle it. Some professional win/mac plugins like Diva and Razor,
are in i7 territory, (but work in wine) and the windows/mac config better be optimized to perfection.

Everyone has a budget, but amid widely ranging financial strata.
The dustup at kvr a while back, included discussing the plight of 3rd-world artists, whose desire
and talents are much stronger than their wallets, and how linux audio
can be helpful in such circumstances. One first-worlder actually compared
his struggles saving up for pro gear, to those of artistic people in the third world.

$75 for the USB stick or $50 for iso download.

But no demo, iw ouldnt buy unless i could try it out and see whats actually underneath. how much of it is open source software that is not meant for commercial resale?

On my systems I was able to push the latency settings down to 0.66ms (-r48000 -p16 -n2) running on the onboard card (as reported by qjackctl, add another 2 ms for adc and dac). One of them is a desktop with a 1.8GHz celeron 430, and the other one a laptop with a core2 T6400 running at 2GHz. Of course, each time you halve the frames, you double the DSP load, and everything is stable at 128 frames, so I just use that setting.

I think the most important part is making a custom kernel, using the snd_rtctimer as the default alsa sequencer timer and setting CONFIG_SND_HDA_PREALLOC_SIZE to "0" (on intel onboards).

Compiling your own jackd and apps helps on crappier CPUs.

Also, I disable anything that might use the processor, make sure the card's got the highest rtprio and a few other tweaks.

My usb interface doesn't allow me to start jack at frame sizes lower than 64, though.

EDIT: corrected latency figure.

The demo currently is the older version, for which there is no charge.

For those not familiar with puppy linux, at first shutdown of the live dvd,
you will have the option to create a savefile on a hardisk, to hold your settings,
and to allow faster booting. The system loads in ram, and is quite nippy.
These squashfs save files can be enlarged, using an included utility. You can
have different savefiles, for different purposes, one for gaming,
on for office, one for music etc if desired.

http://www.zamaudio.com/?p=97

linux mbox driver, says it's in the kernels newer than 3.8rc2

As a linux audio rule of thumb, I would sell/trade what didn't work,
and aquire what does. There are quite a few quality options, these days.
