What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Help with software suggestion

Post by stefan »

Hi,

I'm looking for a free and open source sample browsing utility for *.wav files. I'm on Linux Mint and my Nemo file browser won't let me play *.wav files. Tried plugins for Nemo, but no love. Audacious looked promising, but it hangs after playing a few *.wav. Won't work until I reboot...

A simple system where I can sift through my collection of *.wav files and listen to them would be gr8.

PS. I use jack audio server.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I can suggest anyway:
For browsing my quite huge sample/sound archive, I use Quod Libet.
It's simple to add your sample directories, simple to search, simple to browse lots of samples.
At least for me it is a really useful tool.

Do you use any DAW? Some DAWs will do that already.

You can always drag a directory into Audacious. It will play the entire directory.

I prefer mocp for that because the keyboard configuration is better, therefore navigation is better. But mocp may be intimidating if you're not experienced in Linux.

I'm sure that other media players support drag-and-play.

vlc and smplayer can play drag/dropped .wavs, and loop them
if desired. Choose jackd in their audio preferences, and for
media players in general, check if a jackd plugin is
available in your package manager, in case it's not a built-in function.
Cheers
