Hydrogen for sale on Ebay!?

Post by decomp »

Not sure what section to put this in..

I'm also not sure this is violating any rules but I find it outrageous - someone is selling hydrogen on ebay!

I hate to say, but is this any different from the firms who sell distro CD's? I used to use them back in dial-up days (I still have my very first knoppix CD). It has never been illegal to sell open source software on physical medium, for example Red Enterprise Linux. You are obliged by the GPL to provide the source code upon request for a reasonable fee.

The choice of whether it makes sense is up to the buyer. In the age of fast internet I would obviously say no, but many still do not understand about free software.

Hydrogen is GPL v2 so you're entitled to sell it if you want to.

This is fine from a licensing standpoint. It might be dubious from a trademark standpoint - on the other hand just selling hydrogen as-is seems more honest than rebranding it.

Seems pretty fine to me: the seller calls himself 'myopensourcecd' and mentions in the description that it's open source software. Also the price doesn't sound too outrageous.

We've seen way more fishy schemes of people rebranding OSS software and selling it: at some point 'luxuriousity' sold rebranded versions of all kinds of software, including audacity, the gimp, inkscape etc etc. http://web.archive.org/web/200512240646 ... /index.htm
