Behringer U-Phoria Um2 and other issue

Post by giulio »

I would like to configure a old PC (about 8 years) for music.
I have 3 problem, that I can not figure out.

I tried to ask ubuntu. Here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1250780 ... ntu-studio
But, at now, I didn't have answer. And I think there is too much difficult to explain.
Now I try to write a discussion here, if I may have a little help, thank in advance.

My device are those:
1) Main board gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2H AMD Athlon(tm) X2 245 Processor" 4 gb ram ddr2
2) n.2 Hard disk. One is SSD Sandisk 120gb
3) a external audio usb Behringer U-Phoria UM2 (for audio signal in INPUT)
4) a cheap webcam

My wishes are to make some music and some video. Not professional, just for fan, but no quality too low.
I would like to know if the hardware is enough, or if I need to change something, example the main board (I Have other main boards, but the others are quite old as that).

The issues are 3, first two not so much important, the last more important.
1) Why I see only 3Gb of ram? (in Win7 too I see only 3Gb) There is something I can do for fix?

2) The video I make with webcam is very low fps (2 fps). There is something I can do for fix? Example to change webcam or add a graphic card?

3) last but not least, indeed the more important issue is that:
When I deconnect the U-Phoria the audio is ok. If I see in firefox a video youtube I'm able to hear audio. But when I connect the U-Phoria the audio is OFF.
If I boot with U-Phoria connect, I'm able to record with audacity without problem.
When I play with audacity, I can hear what I record, because I can select the device of internal audio, but for me is impossible to hear a video of youtube in firefox, or other kind of audio.
There is something I can do for fix? So configure ubuntu studio 20.4 to use default input the external usb audio and default output internal audio in somehow. May be is not to difficult, but I don't know how.

If I may add some information or detail just ask, I add.
At the moment I only add that:

dmesg -l err

May be the issue is related with that?
ACPI Error: AE_NOT_FOUND,

In bios setting, there is some choise for hard disk ASA. I don't remember well, but something related of IDE.
May be I need to change the value there?

I checkthe cmos setup utility
There is a choise between:
onchip sata type: native ide / Raid / AHCI
Now is set to Native ide
If I change in AHCI and reboot the PC freeze with that message:
verifyng DMI Pool data .....
So I put again that value Native Ide

Hi giulio,

I'm not familiar with Ubuntu Studio. But I would recommend running either pulseaudio or jack. These are audio layers that enable sharing of a hardware device for multiple programs. A program can grab an alsa hardware device, making it inaccessible for other applications, like your browser. Running pulseausio or jack can deal with this issue.

Pulseaudio is nice for regular desktop use. Jack focuses on low latency an synchronized audio. If I understand correctly you want to record videos using your webcam while recording audio from your Behringer interface? If so, maybe have a look at 'ffmpeg'. The following video might be helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=386Z2yeQ5fo

The cpu should be enough. But maybe running a graphical environment of a cpu leads to high usage. I don't have a computer without a gpu so I don't really know. If you have some gpu laying around I would definately give it a shot if cpu usage is high when using the graphical interface.

For your questions:
  1. Maybe enter your BIOS an check if all the ram is recognized. Maybe a a ram module is defective. Maybe you only have 3gb in the first place. In Linux running "free -h" will tell you how much ram is available. I have 8gb of ram installed. free shows 7.7gb, so its normal to have a bit less than sepcified, but missing 25% is a bit to much..
  2. Not sure about the webcam. Maybe try ffmpeg and see if you drop drames while recording. I don't know how familiar you are with the linux command line. The video above may help while the documentation for ffmpeg is found in 'man ffmpeg'
  3. Install pulseaudio. I don't think you need low latency jack. Also check alsamixer (run it in a terminal), because maybe some channels from your sound device are muted. Here you can also see if your UM2 is recognized by linux.

The ram thing sounds like you’re running a 32bit OS. Make sure you installed a 64bit one. What is the output of uname -a ?

First of all, thank you for replay.
For running pulseaudio or jack. Yes I'm try to understand what to do right with those tools.
I would like:
1) At first make some audio recording with audacity (rec in external usb card, play in internal sound device)
2) Then some video, as above, so record a video (record sound with usb U-phoria) and play to see if video it is ok and of course output in internal sound card.
3) In future, play with midi sequencer with a midi keyboard.
Very simple easy task to do in windows. I did that very easily even 20 years ago, in win95 and win3.1
I would like to try to do in linux, but I see it's not very easy.
I have tried KXstudio and AVlinux and I have some big problems (for WiFi and other issues),
Now I am testing ubuntustudio, no problems with Wifi and the other issues I had with previous two distros, but very big problems with sound.
For problem of ram, I don't care anymore.
Sometime it is a issue of chipset as here: (But I have a different chipset than that of that forum here)
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=123711.0
But 3gb it's ok for me (sound problems are bigger).
I have added a graphic card (GeForce9600), video it's ok, but there is a big noise of fan.
Maybe be I will change with another graphic card without fan in future.
Ok low fps I fixed. That was the web cam I used was old and slow, Now I use a more new and I have 25 fps.
That's ok for webcam and Gugcview for software it's ok too.
Of course UM2 is recognized by linux.
At now, if I record with audacity (with external usb card) and play (with internal card) I don't have problem.
But that because in Audacity it's possible to choise device "in rec" and "out play"
But for other sound issue?
Now do a reboot of PC and then I will write my sound problems in next post.

Ok, I make a reboot of my PC, and I go in guvcview.
I try to record, but no sound.
I go in guvcview audio control.
Now is so:
Api; PORTAUDIO
Device: Jack
Istead of Jack I set "Codec 00 in"
in that Set there is sound
Now I'm able to record and to play and hear the video, It's ok.
After I go in Audacity.
Usually I used Alsa in Audacity, and then Codec0,0 in play, Now I don't see codec0,0, so instead of alsa I choice Jack, in RECord I set "Codec0,0" (my usb external device) and in Device Play I put system.
Now seems that I'm able to record and to hear with Audacity.
Ok, if I have understood well, the issues are that;
1) I must not use Alsa with Audacity, 'cause if Alsa is running in Audacity, neither firefox neither other program, for example program for webcam is able to use sound device. So must to use jack in Audacity.
2) Must to check that jack is running. Because sometime seems that jack stop. And then need to start jack again. Of course if jack stop there is no sound.
Now seems quite ok.
The only problem is that there is a very big strange noise of background with euphoria.
If I put a cable jack from my keyboard (Kawai Es100) directly to audio in of PC instead of in of Euphoria seems to be less noise.
After I will check Euphoria with a microphone and a guitar, but for keyboard better go directly in audio in of PC.
And seems that it's quite easy to make that change both in Audacity and in guvcview.
Ok for now it's all.
The next day I will check some sequencer in ubuntustudio and surely I will have some other big issue to ask for solutions.
Bye.

The problem of ram it's strange... 'cause in that link seems it's possible to upgrade until 8 gb:
https://www.cnet.com/products/gigabyte- ... -amd-740g/

And I put two identical ram of 2Gb.
3Gb in win7 too.
Maybe some issue to check in bios setup?
