Linux Mint Audio Output Quality

Post by Robbie936 »

Forgive me if this is in the wrong section....
I am making the leap of faith from Windows to Linux and now have a dual boot configuration (one step at a time for me).
My computer audio has usb output to a NAD M51 DAC and on to a pair Adam A8x speakers or a Voiletctric HPA V90 headphone amp and Sennheiser HD800 headphones. The computer output under Mint is only 44 kHz 16 bit and i want to improve that to 96kHz and 24 bit.
Could you please advise the best method for this.
Thank you
Robbie

We'll need a bit more info here.

Your moving from windows to Linux. What is it you did in windows that you wanna do on Linux now?
Produce, record music.
Mix music (DJ style).
Just play music.

For just playing music you'll probably need to configure pulseaudio. And frankly I don't know much about that.
I guess a search for "pulseaudio 96khz" would get you started how to configure that.

For mixing, producing, recording music you're most likely to need jack. That's a whole different beast.
Good starter :

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your replies. The Mint installation is a standard install so i do not think Jack is installed.
I only want to play music in Linux nothing else audio wise. I will research pulseaudio

I think you may need to manually edit the /etc/pulse/daemon.conf

default-sample-rate = 44100
alternate-sample-rate = 96000

OR

default-sample-rate = 48000
alternate-sample-rate = 96000

and also set the variable which is probably set to s16le (16-bit) to s24le (24-bit)

you might also get results with default-sample-rate = 96000, and alternate-sample-rate = 44100

On most modern computers and audio hardware, I think you could replace 44100 with 48000.
Most videos and DVD's and even some MP3's are 48000.

I hope this helps. You will need to edit as root, so be careful. ("sudo leafpad" from terminal, etc)

Apart from all that, but does one hear any difference between 48 and 96 kHz?

Thank you all for your responses, i have managed to tweak the daemon.conf and now have my 96 kHz setting. The learning curve for changing the file was a bit challenging but i will persevere.
You are probably correct in that my ageing ears can;t tell the difference in sound quality but it's the principle! I've got a very flash DAC and great speakers so i can't waste them.
Cheers
Rob
