Are there still issues with proprietary graphics drivers?

I have read in the past that proprietary graphics drivers can have an affect on audio performance. I am wondering if this is still an issue? I am using nvidia graphics. I am getting acceptable performance but i'm just curious if i would likely get any better or worse performance using the open source drivers?
