Hi I just purchased the Steinberg UR-22 and Qjactl won't start. Here is the output for aplay/lusb:

This is a kernel patch, that means, to use it, you need to fetch the kernel source, edit them and rebuild the kernel.

Maybe I should take this back and just keep the Scarlett 2i2? That sounds like an awful lot of work for hardly noticeable gains, am I correct?

Yeah these 2 devices are very similiar performance hardware-wise. And on linux, they both use the same generic usb driver, so no difference in software. Why did you get the UR22 when you have a 2i2? Doesn't seem like an upgrade, unlike for example, moving to an RME Babyface.

I asked the guy at Guitar Center what would be an upgrade to the Scarlett 2i2 before we reach Apogee level quality/price and he said the Steinberg UR-22 because of the sampling rate of 192 vs 96 with Scarlett and maybe something else. Its definitely a heavier box, which could mean the pre-amps are of slighly higher quality. I don't know. Does anybody on the forums use this?

Just when you follow the thread above, you will see that it works.

For me, patch and build the kernel isn't hassle at all, as I usually build my own rt-kernel anyway. On debian based systems it is easier as you guess, you will found a couple of detailed instructions, in the net, how to do it.
If it goes wrong, no problem, you could still boot your old kernel anyway, so, no fear, there is nothing to lose.

Increasing the sample rate beyond 44.1/48 kHz is a waste of CPU and storage. It won't bring more details, et even can intruduce noise by interferences of the wanted sound with high frequencies. Since oversampling is done in the A/D-chips there's no quality gain in using 96 or 192 kHz.

there is no need to recompile the entire kernel for the ur22 , only 3 modules for the 3.2.0.4 rt kernel in use with tango studio (in use also with wheezy rt) .

NB:sorry for my poor english ... and later when the wheezy's kernel will be upgraded in tango studio, this update will be normaly integrated with the kernel package in use with tango studio.
