Archlinux - jack2, dbus, cadence and pulseaudio issues...

Post by karm »

Hi,

I'm stuck on this one. I've installed arch tonight and it is great, unity works smoothly, lightdm is great, and systemd looks very nice. However, I can't get jack to work. This is a bit complicated. I tried several versions of jack: jack2 (official repo), jack2-dbus (official), jack2-kxstudio-dbus (aur), jack2-git (aur). The problem is, I can't get it to work with dbus, pulseaudio and cadence at the same time.

Jack2-git works ok with pulseaudio and starts at the boot perfectly but cadence segfaults and when I try cadence-session-start -s it tells me that org.jackserver.dbus (or something like that) is null, anyway it tells me that there is no dbus object for jack. I think dbus is broken in this build because I can start jack only with jackd and not with jack_control.

Jack2-kxstudio-dbus cannot start at the boot.

Code: Select all

jack_control[369]: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NotSupported: Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11
I foun topic about this error at arch forums (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153527) but the conclusion was to use jack2-git. With jack2-kxstudio-dbus I can start the server with jack_control provided that pulseaudio is set to autospawn=no. but it is not always working...

I'm confused. Can anybody help me? I'm new to systemd and dbus is quite mystery to me also. But I would like to setup it and learn how this stuff works. Thanks in advance.

Then, make sure you have enabled DBUs to start at boot (before the login manager, lightdm). A default Arch install doesn't do this by default afaik, and DBus is required to make Cadence work.
now, with systemd, d-bus is installed and lunched automaticly

I’m on Arch here, using jack2-kxstudio-dbus + Cadence with a firewire audio interface. According to the Archlinux wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/D-Bus) dbus should be running because systemd needs it and it is systemd that starts other services, including X11 or lightdm. I’ve tried jack2-kxstudio and it works equally well. I’m not using Unity, though, but XFCE with lxdm.

Archlinux moved to systemd relatively recently. Is systemd running on your system?

Sorry, I was afk since writing OP.

Yes, I have systemd up and running. AFAIU to be able to autostart Jack I need to specify a .service file. Am I right?

I wrote one like this:

Code: Select all

[Unit]
Description=JACK
After=sound.target

[Service]
User=mks
ExecStart=/usr/bin/jack_control ds alsa

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
And it fails to start with the same message as in topic linked in OP:
jack.service - JACK
Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/jack.service; enabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since nie 2013-01-20 17:28:24 CET; 1min 1s ago
Process: 1311 ExecStart=/usr/bin/jack_control ds alsa (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)

sty 20 17:28:24 shi-emperor jack_control[1311]: bus = dbus.SessionBus()
sty 20 17:28:24 shi-emperor jack_control[1311]: File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/dbus/_dbus.py", line 211, in __new__

sty 20 17:28:24 shi-emperor jack_control[1311]: bus = BusConnection.__new__(subclass, bus_type, mainloop=mainloop)
sty 20 17:28:24 shi-emperor jack_control[1311]: File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/dbus/bus.py", line 122, in __new__
sty 20 17:28:24 shi-emperor jack_control[1311]: bus = cls._new_for_bus(address_or_type, mainloop=mainloop)
sty 20 17:28:24 shi-emperor jack_control[1311]: dbus.exceptions.DBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NotSupported: Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11

sty 20 17:28:24 shi-emperor systemd[1]: Unit jack.service entered failed state
~
AFAIU it is because service is started with root privileges while root is not logged in and no X11 display is available for him. I'm not sure how to proceed from this point.

Even that jack and pulseaudio are stopped I can't run cadence:

Joermungand, could you tell me how your system is configured? Do you use a custom .service file for jack?

FalkTX, no need to get angry. I understood when you wrote it for the first time. The reason I try running it as a service is that cadence segfaults thus it can't manage anything here... do you have any idea why it is behaving like this?

It's ok I guess. I can start cadence-jacksettings without issues.

However:

Yes, Jack has started. I wrote "NULL" instead of "DUMMY", my bad.
lsof | grep asound
jackdbus 616 mks mem REG 8,4 987128 4871379 /usr/lib/libasound.so.2.0.0
Firefox also tried to use asound but after I closed it I got the same errors in cadence-logs.

With driver set to DUMMY I get:

but with ALSA:

Re: Archlinux - jack2, dbus, cadence and pulseaudio issues..

Post by karm »

I rebooted and nothing changed.

Cadence segfaults. Even if driver is set to DUMMY.

One thing worth noting: even that I disabled and removed jack service, pulseaudio is still started at boot. It fails because jack is dead and I set it up to use pulse to jack bridge. But it may be interfering somehow, I guess...

here is bootlog part about pulseaudio:

Re: Archlinux - jack2, dbus, cadence and pulseaudio issues..

Post by Joermungand »

Hi, sorry, I wasn’t around. I have the same dbus-related packages installed, except the ubuntu ones, and the same version of Cadence. I don’t have pulseaudio installed at all, just plain alsa. I use the alsa loop bridge in Cadence. In order to get snd-aloop to be loaded automatically at boot, you need:

Code: Select all

$ cat /etc/modules-load.d/snd-aloop.conf
# Load snd-aloop module
snd-aloop

pulseaudio is not running:
$ systemctl status pulseaudio
pulseaudio.service
Loaded: error (Reason: No such file or directory)
Active: inactive (dead)
and there were no processes to kill. Anyway, why cadence segfaults?
