Thanks for those helpful posts. I'll revisit this thread later when I'm ready to upgrade in a few months.
If any of those solutions work for me, that might make me change my opinion of Linux audio from "kinda messed up" to "almost just works." Although, I must say I'm pretty impressed with KXS and AVL even though I haven't tried them yet. I suspect the dream distro for guys like me is just around the corner.
BTW, you might think after reading my posts that I'm some sort of secret Linux hater. I'm not. Audio is a disappointment for me, but that's not all I use my computer for. They rest is smooth sailing.

Give KXStudio a try(either the downloadable ISO or using the repos over your favorite flavor of ubuntu) and I think you'll see PulseAudio does work when someone(thank you as alway falkTX our savior) configures the audio systems to play nice together!
EDIT:I just wrote a tutorial in the how-to section of the boards to give people the install steps that work to get me my setup with Mint 13. Here it is http://www.linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=9666

No problem, always happy to help. Mint really seems to be the way to go these days. It just works. As much as any distro can, I guess. I really don't have any problems with my setup. The occasional upgrade breakage, but it is what it is. I hope you have a better time with linux audio in the future!
