ars technica on Linux audio

Post by steevc »

This appeared today

http://arstechnica.com/open-source/guid ... beyond.ars

It covers most of the major apps. Not too much depth, but it may alert a few more people to the open source options.

I had seen some of the comments already. A lot about lack of hardware support. I think we could do with some articles about this as a lot of stuff out there is pretty old. I know that USB devices I've tried (Logitech webcam and Zoom H4) have 'Just Worked'. I know these are not 'professional grade', but things are generally much simpler than a few years ago. Has FIrewire support improved much lately?

From what I've seen here a lot of USB/MIDI controllers work well on Linux too.

I don't have experience with the latest audio apps on other platforms, but Ardour, Hydrogen and Rosegarden seem pretty capable to me. For me the limitations are more in my knowledge than in the applications. I have a few song projects to work on and I am confident the Linux tools are adequate for those.
