Hi GMaq,
Nice job
I note that your list of softwares does not mention jconvolver, libzita-* and other tools made by Fons Adriaensen (jkmeter, jaaa, etc).
Any reason for not including these tools ?

Re: AV Linux 4.0 'Black n' Blue' Released!
Wow, thanks for mentioning.
I recently added AVLinux 3.1 to my machine to dual boot with (the superb) Arch.
Haven't done much with AV yet but it seems extremely good especially if you're looking for a ready-to-go system.
I'll definitely upgrade to 4.0 as soon as I get around to it.
Cheers

It is very good - the pops & clicks I was getting under Ubuntu Studio went away when I migrated to AV Linux 3.1 without any tweaking.PatS wrote: Haven't done much with AV yet but it seems extremely good especially if you're looking for a ready-to-go system.

Re: AV Linux 4.0 'Black n' Blue' Released!
Hi, Thanks guys.
@thorgal,
In reading over the list there are a few omissions that I will fix including some of Fons' libs (they are included just not mentioned). I was more focused on the GUI stuff and the actual apps where people are going to meet these libs, a couple of excellent apps you MAY have heard of...Guitarix and JC_gui for instance. Also I figured a 2 page list was getting wearisome enough for people who aren't terribly detail oriented or are new to Linux, if I started listing too many support libs as vital as they are the list could get very long!
@PatS & werock
Thanks!
@thomasK,
I have included PPPOEconf to help people set up DSL, I don't use DSL myself and actually have had only one complaint about it on my own forum so I'm not sure what else is needed, many users have DSL working on the older versions without PPPOEconf. The networking aspects of AV Linux are pure Debian packages and WicD there is not any special "AV Linux" method of networking or DSL, what works for any Debian distro should work for AV Linux.

HI GMaq!
Congratulations on your new release. I've been running it and, so far so good! Performance really improved in comparison to previous versions.
Great work!

Thanks for the feedback guys!
@falktx,
I appreciate your comments very much, your KXStudio and PPA almost made me say "OK...I'm done here!" If I were more of a Ubuntu lover there may not have been an AV Linux 4.0 at all
Re: ladish
Probably too much of how I set up AV Linux relates to my own personal workflow and I have never been a big lash user or used much more than 2 or 3 apps interconnected at the same time (ie Ardour and Hydrogen or QSynth and Ardour). I looked at ladish and thought it was still very alpha so I haven't prioritized it yet, I think it's a good thing we aren't all "playing the same song" distro-wise, I think that makes KXStudio more attractive to in depth Linux users who already know what ladish is and want it ready to go. No one on my own forum has even asked about it so I haven't done much about it.
As far as updating... Debian Testing/Unstable is a difficult beast to tame...Ubuntu has paid devs doing just that for them... for someone on their own like me it isn't so easy so my original "model" was to regularly release a working ISO with everything ready to go and updated (kind of like a Debian dyne:bolic), if some of the more adventurous users want to play Russian roulette with Debian unstable it's their choice. However that is changing as we head toward Debian 6.0 which will be an unprecedented multimedia friendly version of Debian Stable when it arrives. I'll have to admit to being far lazier than you when it comes to packaging... by going with my ISO model I have more freedom to do whatever it takes to get the job done and building from source etc. In the long run doing it your way is probably better.
I used to have to build about 70% of AV Linux from source to get what I (and other's) wanted but Debian's newly formed 'pkg-multimedia' team is doing a great job of doing about 90% of what I used to do within official Debian repos
As far as packaging the non-free stuff that may be something to discuss, I personally got permission from all of the individual vendors for use in AV Linux 4.0 and some of them had more strict terms and conditions than others. Anyway I'd love to discuss this and other things further with you on IRC sometime soon!
Keep up your excellent work, I truly believe it is best for us to "complement" each other's work than to "compete". I get the impression you feel the same way. At the end of the day getting a useable product into the end-users hands is the name of the game even if our approaches and focuses may differ.

Re: AV Linux 4.0 'Black n' Blue' Released!
Hi,
A little update...
An updated ISO was uploaded (AV Linux 4.0-20100706) recently with better nVidia LiveDVD support and the very latest Openshot Video Editor with Blender 2.5A2 and the new Openshot 3D Animated Title capability. Debian Sid (and soon Squeeze) is now featuring a choice of JACK1 or JACK2 and AV Linux now comes with JACK1 as default due to it's almost universal compatibility with both software and hardware. If you want JACK2 it's only a repository click away. There are also a few other minor changes that can be seen on the changelog.txt file in the ISO ftp
New Ardour 2.8.11 and Guitarix 0.10 packages have been made available as well on the "Packages" page.
I'm on a development "sanity break" for the summer but will still be active on the AV Linux forum and will update important packages as needed.
Thanks, -GLEN

Re: AV Linux 4.0 'Black n' Blue' Released!
I just tried the latest live dvd, and it worked very nicely. Also I approve of having closed source software there, like pianoteq and renoise. It's cool to experience that you aren't limited to free stuff on linux.
Also, there's some zynaddsubfx (yoshimi) presets that are bundled with the zynaddsubfx vsti that I didn't see anywhere. Maybe you should get those for the next release? I know where to get them, but I'm sure there are others who don't.

Thanks for your comments,
Care to share the link for those presets? I'll include them in the next release or ISO update, I'm not a huge ZynAdd/Yoshimi user so hints like this are valuable info to me.

Here's the download link for the vsti:
http://rapidshare.com/files/390081530/Z ... 20beta.zip
In the archive there is a banks folder, where you find both the regular and the extra presets I talked about.

Re: AV Linux 4.0 'Black n' Blue' Released!
More Good news -- 4.1!
Seen in Ardour news https://ardour.org/node/3856 a notice from distro composer GMaq:
" new release of AV Linux (4.1). This one comes with a customized ArdourVST build with all the fixins... VST,LV2,FREESOUND, FFT_Analysis and WIIMOTE support, of course the regular Debian build is also readily available in the Debian Repos if you prefer.
Full scoop here: http://www.remastersys.com/forums/index.php?topic=976.0
"
Pretty impressive to have this update so soon!
Is there a way to use a kernel without PAE so as to use AVLinux on older laptops with
Pentium M series CPUs? (Caught between using FireWire for NRV-10 mixer and specs
of newer machines...not to mention 'passing the bucks'.)
Problem:
The usual kernel for AVLinux is negated Immediately by the laptop, unlike Debian -rt kernels which do boot and run (e.g., Musix 2.0). GMaq clearly labels 4.0 and 3.1 as 'pae' -- but maybe we could substitute in another kernel? Or would that cause havoc with the apps?

http://bandshed.net/kernels/aufs-module ... _i386.deb
http://bandshed.net/kernels/linux-image ... _i386.deb
Determined to run AVLinux if possible,
1. Howto substitute in a kernel if it would boot ---
is described thus in the UbuntuStudio Preparation guide section of Real time (-rt) and Low latency (-lowlatency) kernels (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ubunt ... reparation):
and then edit to set the default kernel.
2. Do you think re-composition would work, since AVLinux is NOT booting in the Mobile Pentium,
Thanks a bunch, we clearly DO want to use AVLinux!
