New Software: Tembro, All-in-one instrument (Sampler or Rompler)

Post by nils »

Ladies and Gentlemen,

this is the first release of Tembro, the all-in-one instrument.

Tembro (which is Esperanto for musical "Timbre") is a virtual software instrument based on samples. All instruments are permanently built-in, there is no option to load your own files. New instruments are only added with new releases, old ones are never removed.

That makes Tembro reliable, predictable, portable and compatible. All projects and all users have the same "instrument" with the same instrument sounds, numbering system, midi controls… ; a solid basis for communication and collaboration.

To indicate this initial release we start with version number 0.5.0. The majority of the envisioned feature set is implemented, but there is still a lot to do. Feedback is very much welcome.

It is released under GPLv3.

You can find all releases as sources here. Also check your distribution
for packages in a few days after this announcement, please.

Damn you, nils. I'm finishing up work on something that will be similiar. This time you stepped over the line by forking my project before I even released the source code. You're an evil person.

Just for that, I'm naming my software "New Tembro".

I presume that nothing is loaded until you explicitly select it to be loaded. Then you save that "setup" and distribute the "setup file" along with any midi file that uses this setup. So the libs will take up a lot of space on your hard drive (or SSD), but use only as much RAM as is needed.

But I'm guessing here because nils' docs are pretty much "This is GPL software. If you want to know anything else, you need to file a Freedom Of Information action.". ***frowns at nils***

If I know nils, probably a fork of the GPL.

I hope not. GPL is not good for samples. Sample don't have source code and derivative works - music - have to be released under the same license.

I was being facetious. I think it's licensed under Creative Commons Non-profitable Attitude. According to that license, you can sell the samples as long as you lose money on every sale, and you get to be verbally abusive to your customers as a result.

The instruments are CC-0. There is one or two CC-By. Each instrument has it's license visible in the program itself.

Nils, I got the jack version bug sorted out, and Tembro now behaves as it should. (as well as Fluajho, which was the original bug I reported on the website.)

Thanks again for your help, and nice work on these apps. I think they'll both be handy when sketching out musical ideas. I've tested both in Agorejo taking midi out from Midieditor, and they work well.

Ok, the compulsory compilation questions: trying to build tembro on AV Linux MX-21. First need to build libcalfbox-lss. Get error: Dependency "sndfile" not found. sndfile is installed but I suppose I need a dev file, but there is no dev file for sndfile. So I am stuck. Suggestions? FYI: AVL-MXE21 is based on Debian Bullseye.
