Perhaps I will consider a USB audio device one day if performance finally surpasses PCI/PCIe devices. :mrgreen:

As a side note after reading the comments on that Phoronix article, I haven't seen this tweak mentioned in any Linux audio tweaking guides:
I don't have the config to hand for the machine that needed the same fix, but I'm fairly sure the broken piece is module-suspend-on-idle. Disable that in /etc/pulse/default.pa and everything should be fine again.
Here's the copy & paste solution for the average lazy Linux user where you don't even need to type in your password:

.include /etc/pulse/default.pa
unload-module module-suspend-on-idle
EOF
It's for PA of course so only peripherally relevant for audio production, but worth remembering if one does use PA.
