Vital released under GPLv3+

Post by Basslint »

https://github.com/mtytel/vital

Thank you Matt Tytel for this wonderful gift! :D

It seems the name is trademarked though, so to distribute it on distro repositories it needs to be forked with a name that does not include "Vital" (so no LibreVital or OpenVital). I propose "Vitus".

The parts which connect to the Vital server also need to be patched out.

Well now, this makes an already good synth even better. Wasn't expecting this so soon. (Though with Matt doing open source stuff before, I figured it was an eventual possibility).

Not that it makes any real practical difference for me personally—I was already using Vital, and I will most likely continue using the main distribution version. But as a matter of principle it makes me feel better.

In viewtopic.php?p=129425#p129425 @LAM proposed 'Vial' - which I like as it's "Like Vital but with some bits removed" :D

I like Vial. Vials in videogames are used to restore life points, so it makes sense :D

A vial is a small bottle, usually for storing liquids.

I don't like much Vial, a bit "weak" for my taste, could be a muesli brand. I'd prefer a synonym, like Crucial or Vibrant.

-> Do not connect to any web service at https://vital.audio, https://account.vital.audio or https://store.vital.audio from your own builds. This is against the terms of using those sites.

So the question is: Is this synth usable when you build it from source?

I am pretty sure it is, the server should be just for downloading extra presets and wavetables.

I tried to build it on a ARM Linux. But it failed because of firebase sdk. Does anyone know how turn off the dependent firebase?

Yes, it needs to compile with the REQUIRE_AUTH=0 flag. Most workable fork (for now) is here: https://github.com/taylordotfish/vital

Kudos to FalkTX!

Unfortunately it doesn't help me because it needs OpenGL 1.4 and I have 1.3. Dunno how to install Mesa 1.4 on my Ubuntu 16.04.

I don't understand the problem about license. A lot of software in GNU/Linux distros have software with GPLv3 and developers don't change the name or logo of applications.

It's about the trademark, not the license :D
