Guitarix2 release version 0.42.0

Post by tramp »

I'm pleased to announce the release of guitarix2-0.42.0

A virtual guitar amplifier for Linux running with jack (Jack Audio Connection Kit) released under the
GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version.

ZamAudio meets Guitarix

https://github.com/zamaudio

For this release Damien Zammit from ZamAudio has reworked our tube emulation.
This improved beside the overall sound, the dynamic responses of the different tube simulations.
Be aware please, that this may break your existing presets, but,
we believe that the improvement in sound is it worse
to force you to readjust your presets to match the new tube sims.

Further news are:
Reworked French translation by Olivier Humbert
Add DC-Blocker on the Input
Add Output Limiter
Add Volume controls for the Power Amp plugin
Fix version checks for needed packages
Fix several small Bugs and hopefully don't introduce to much new ones

First off: thanks for the release ! The improvement of the amp sim sound is definitely noticeable, especially in the high frequencies.
The only thing I find weird is the hard limiter that has been added, which creates a ducking effect when going over the limit.

Yes, I fully understand that.
I fought long with myself before I add it, but, as guitarix is able to produce a very, very high gain output, I decided to implement it as last resort. In special now with the much more dynamic responsibility.
Means, you may adjust the output gain controller so that you don't exceed the nominal level (-1.0<->1.0), then the limiter wont be do anything at all. When you noticed the limiter, you already overcome that level, which leads into hard clipping, which sound much less pleasant then the limiter ducking effect.

That's fine. I would like a visual aid to see when the limiter is being triggered so that I know how to find the optimal level for the gain/volume knobs.

@tramp I want to take the opportunity to thank you and the other Guitarix contributors for all of the great work you've done over the years. Guitarix is a great piece of software and you guys are a great example of what I think of open source (being an open source developer myself).

Just a stupid question ...
First thanks a lot for your work on guitarix. I use it daily with a lot of pleasure :)
Now the stupid question:
You say you added a limiter to guitarix ?
Is it activated by default ?
Where can I find it ?

Thanks to all for given feedback, it's good to hear that guitarix still is useful.
@tristan.tarrant
I've add now a visual indicator for the Limiter in the main amp. You could nicely see now when the limiter steps in.
@ycollette
Yes, it's active by default. As mentioned above, in the git version there is now a indicator added which show when the limiter steps in.

The limiter should be deactivable.
It has a real impact on the sound ...

I really don't want to make it selectable, but may be I was a tad to conservative with the threshold it used (-6dB).
I've changed the limiter threshold now to 0dB.
So now, the limiter will step in only when you run into hard clipping otherwise.
The new indicator widget on the main amp shows when that is the case, and how hard the limiter act. So it will be easy to adjust the overall output volume to avoid that the limiter steps in. Please check out from git and let me know if you be fine with that changes, I'll push a quick fix release out then.

Thanks for the change. It's way better like that.
I used the oscilloscope to tune the level of the distortion and to make sure that nothing was clipping.
The oscilloscope is very very very useful for that :)
I really appreciate your work !
