falkTX wrote:sampling of the instruments is quite useful, it helps to reduce CPU usage (though I guess FM synths are not the most heavy things...) and it also allows for much easier beat-sequencing. one could create an hydrogen drumkit out of a FM synth, then work from there,
Yes, I've done this myself quite often, though with sounds from hardware synths, where there was no other way, because I usually only have one "instance" of each ;) But, like I said above, several instances of the synth and a proper track routing gives you an equivalent workflow.
falkTX wrote:instead of having to have a synth open specifically just for this.
I don't see this as a problem. What's the difference to non-drum sounds?
falkTX wrote:if I want to make a song in a modular host like carla (why not?), having samples helps a lot.
then I can create loops out of these...
You can use MIDI loops, can you not?

 No sampler - i think that's good in this context.

usually a drum kit takes about 10 tracks, and a couple of buses ...

this is for kick, snare and hi hat (I'm still working on the tom-toms :P )

I guess you understand my desire to sample the drum sounds generated by the synth

PS. this is not the FM project but something else I'm working on

Funky! :)

It looks to me, though, as if you're not using the synth for sound design, but the stack of effects your putting on each instrument. Which is a valid approach, but comes with the cost in resources...

Is that allowed by the rules? I was under the impression that we should work from the 15th to the 15th.
It is of course just short drum sample.. :)

The rules only say your entry should be created specifically for the competition, not when :)

Do we need a special thread to share tips, patches etc etc?

Cool. Can you change the title to "Open Source Music FM Synthesizer Challenge Discussion" (notice the "r")?
