LV2 plugin support comes to Cinelerra 5.1!!

Post by GMaq »

Hi,

A VERY exciting development over the past month or so in Cinelerra-GG (aka 'Cin 5.1') is the integration of LV2 Audio plugins with initial UI support, so far many LV2 plugins (Calf, Invada, Guitarix, LSP) are supported in the latest May 31 monthly Cinelerra repository packages..

Important note: Cinelerra-GG has moved to it's own site and the Repositories have moved as well:

A little background...

Cinelerra Video Editor for many years has been best known for its original 'HV' (Heroine Virtual) variant and the later but more popular and better maintained 'CV' (community version). Suffice it to say Cinelerra may have the distinction of being one of the best loved and most hated applications in Linuxdom... Of recent interest is the 'Cin 5.1' variant which started out as a merge of all existing active forks and from there went on to receive an unprecedented number of commits fixing long standing bugs, introducing new features and producing countless improvements, this version of Cinelerra is a whole different animal than it's forebears and will not disappoint anyone trying it again with an open mind, underneath the hood it truly stacks up against any NLE out there regardless of platform.

The dynamic duo behind 'Cin 5.1' are a couple known on the Cinelerra mailing list as 'Goodguy' and Phyllis, Goodguy does the coding and Phyllis looks after communications, organization and documentation. They are an amazing team and can get a miraculous amount of work done in a short time, the changelogs for every months end release would be impressive even as annual changelogs! What is even more impressive is these two will freely admit that they are neither hardcore video nor audio experts, they generously take User input from the Cinelerra mailing list and are extremely accommodating to users and find a way to get it done and done right! Also of note is the icon and theme redesign in progress by a User on the mailing list known as 'Sam'.

I'm posting this item because this is big news in the Linux Audio and Video realm, and the antiquated and tiny Cinelerra mailing list is not very good exposure for the breadth and quality of work that is being done here... I also would like to use this as an opportunity to call on the LV2 developers we have here at Linuxmusicians for some advice and assistance because Goodguy has gone from knowing virtually nothing about LV2 to making Cinelerra an LV2 host from scratch using the resources on drobilla.net. Getting GTK UI's working has been a lot of work and he is currently working on getting more and more plugin UI's to work but running into issues with some Xlib and OpenGL based UI's, something like Carla-Rack LV2 would be an invaluable resource to get working in Cin 5.1 as well and would open Cin up to supporting other plugin types. Currently Cin 5.1 provides a host generated basic UI with a simple knob and slider to tweak parameters and of course will show the plugin's native UI if it is supported. Obviously Audio plugins in the sphere of Video editing would mostly encompass Noise reduction, EQ, Channel dynamics, Channel correction and perhaps spatial effects like Reverbs and Delays, things like guitar effects and Synthesizers will not be very commonly used.

This is a significant opportunity to integrate and bring the Audio restoration and processing potential all of the great LV2 plugins we know and love into a first rate NLE. My small part in it is merely to get the word out and hopefully get the right people in the same room together.

@falkTX @sadko4u @x42 @lucianodato and any other LV2 developers if you are interested in having a look at Cin 5.1's current hosting implementation or have advice or suggestions for Goodguy please sent me a PM, Goodguy is OK with me getting you connected via email but I don't want to post it in this topic..

I really look forward to seeing what can be achieved on the Audio side of Cinelerra collaboratively! In the meantime check out the May 31 release with LV2 Audio plugin support for yourself!!

Hi Glenn! I don't know much about lv2 host implementation myself but I can surely try it out and test my plugins.

I'd highly recommend he get involved with the lv2 mailing list if he has questions or desires discussion. http://lists.lv2plug.in/listinfo.cgi/devel-lv2plug.in
Thats the best place I think for such discussions to occur.
Great feature though, thanks for the heads up!

Hi ssj71, yet another great LV2 person I'm glad to see in this thread :D

Great minds think alike, Robin Gareus also suggested that and I passed the suggestion along, thanks!

If I wasn't so happy with Kdenlive, this might tempt me to give Cinelerra another try.

Wow nice!
I have read a bit about Cinelerra and seen it in a distro somewhere, probably AVLINUX.
It's very impressive!

I don't know much about video editing, but I always keep some video stuff around because they're fun to play with and I might take a break from music to make some of my own videos. Although I use a lot of Windows software in WINE for audio, I only use Linux stuff for video and a lot of Linux stuff for graphics and file management.

This news about the plugins makes me happy.
Now it's easier than before to be competitive against the (other) pros!
THANKS.

Hi,

Some further testing and an interim testing static build release has even more LV2 plugins working including x42 EQ10Q and Carla-Rack, my guess is the next monthly update of Cin will have LV2 support pretty much nailed down... It appears LV2 will be an option the user can set rather than overwhelming new users or those not wanting LV2 with providing it right out of the box.
