[ANN] Vee One Suite 0.8.4 - A Late-Summer'17 release

Post by rncbc »

Greetings!

The Vee One Suite of old-school software instruments, respectively synthv1, as a polyphonic subtractive synthesizer, samplv1, a polyphonic sampler synthesizer and drumkv1 as yet another drum-kit sampler, welcomes a brand new and fourth member, padthv1 as a polyphonic additive synthesizer, now joining the late-summer'17 release party.

All available in dual form:
a pure stand-alone JACK client with JACK-session, NSM (Non Session management) and both JACK MIDI and ALSA MIDI input support;
a LV2 instrument plug-in.

The Vee One Suite are free, open-source Linux Audio software, distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2 or later.

And now being the gang-of-four!

padthV1 is awesome, not something to be understood overnight,
full of surprises, and not something that will gather dust.
Thanks for the rpms.

There may be a vst scanning regression in qtractor. I have an up-to-date Mint 18.
Scanning vsts, U-he and discoDSP in .vst, is very hit-and-miss. Sometimes none,
sometimes or one or two, rescanning might add another each time, then fewer next time,
and I notice the qtractor messages window often includes or concludes with this:

QProcess: Destroyed while process ("/usr/bin/qtractor_vst_scan") is still running

vst scanning behaves like there is some timer going off randomly, so it
never completes the task, or only partially completes it, and a little
different each time. And it may be worse when many other apps are running,
but I'm out of testing time tonight.

Also, of the vsts in /usr/lib/vst, only carla, drow, amsynth, and ArgotLunar2 scan and list,
but zyn, zam, TAL, Helm, Lufticus, and some 50+ others do not :?

All the lv2, ladspa, and dssi scans are normal and fast.
Cheers

thanks in return.

in case you haven't discovered already ;) you can edit the partials (aka. harmonics if scale=0) with the mouse in two manners:
1) left-click on the small yellow circle and drag up or down each partial/harmonic stick magnitude;
2) shift/ctrl+left-click and draw freely all over :)

this might be subject to another topic perhaps... but try whether dummy VST scanning may help (it has the drawback that it doesn't find any VSTShell sub-plugins, so beware).

anyway, the reason for this behavior is most probably due to one or more rogue VST plugin objects that are randomly crashing the qtractor_vst_scan process somehow--on my previous experience, couple of years ago, U-He's Diva used to be one that caused such , but sure there maybe others that are lurking in your VST search paths...

i believe we've discussed this very issue a few years ago here--nothing has changed to that regard on the qtractor front i'm afraid--the recommendation is to rebuild/reorganize your VST paths/repository with only sane plugins and eventually add a experimental/staging path for suspect ones (eg. ~/.vst for tried and true production-ready ones and ~/.vst_testing for the trials; of course you'll have to add this one explicitly on VST plugin search paths, in last).

hth.

on the other news: it has come to my despair that the recently announced AppImage's are, eh, FUBAR, so don't even try those. until further notice.

cheers && thanks.

[UPDATE:] hopefully, all AppImage's are now OK.
if you have downloaded any of them before just to find it just DOA or FUBAR, now's the time to try it all over again :)
cheers

Thanks for the reminders! The Bliss plugin had 'expired' (the dev has now posted a new version)
and when removed, things got better. Re-starting with an empty .vst, I found that the U-he plugins
wanted to be reinstalled, rather than their folders simply moved back. So I did that, and was well.
I added some zyn and TAL items, all was well. Scanning vsts commenced and finished
as expected, when adding a track.

Now the fun part! :wink: I then linked a LinVst wrapped SampleTank 3 plugin to .vst
and restarted qtractor. Now, all the U-he plugins, and most of the others did not list
in the vst scan, but instead, moved over to the 'any plugin' scan list
Bug, or feature? :lol:

...and...after restarting qtractor yet again, and switching the scan choice from 'any', back to 'vst',
all the vsts again scanned coriktlee 8) And worked musically

So now I can use your tips regarding padthV1 to make sounds for layering
with the the free SampleTank version's grand piano! A nice duo.

I think it would be good for scanning for 'any' to occur when qtractor starts,
based on a quick check for new plugins, and using the previous
scan results if no new plugins are detected.

I also tested a bunch of wrapped windoze vsts in qtractor:
Dimension Pro, Rapture, Alchemy Player, Zampler RX,
Synthmaster2, Synthmaster One, Reaktor 6, Replika,
Amplitube 4, LaGrange, and Emmissary, all the gui and sounds
were in working order, in Synthmaster One, it's browser window
needed to be open to bypass a text widget that didn't update
the name of a new preset choice. All in all, quite a nice showing.

I used the wrapper LinVst to wrap the .wine/drive_c/Program Files/VstPlugins folder,
I made symbolic links to /home/me/.vst of some of my favorite plugins,
a revolving door these days, with great ones hanging low
on heavily bent on the branches.

Long live fierce competition!

[OT] re. Qtractor VST plug-in scanning... for which I'm sorry to have this thread hi-jacked anyway :)
the news are that VST inventory scanning (aka. dummy/out-of-)process has been refactored in two ways, both fully benefic to the end user:
1. the scanning process now auto-restarts and resumes from failure, hopefully leaving bad VST plug-ins out from the listing;
2. the scanning results are now cached persistently across sessions and/or power cycles, until you make changes to the VST plug-in search paths and contents; of course you can rebuild the listing anytime you see fit (refresh).
nb. these changes are only featured on latest git head master (qtractor-0.8.3.13git+) and beyhond ;) as for trying from the latest AppImage snapshot, there it goes: http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... 4.AppImage (permalink)
hth.
