Linux REAPER works!

Since when did Linux-native REAPER start working? It's certainly not finished but you can already record with the native Linux version of REAPER.

The main issue as it stands is that it seems you are restricted to the plugins that are bundled with REAPER, or at least I have had no success in getting it to recognise the U-he Linux VSTs I have installed. The font rendering needs some love and the file dialogues aren't working properly but JACK IO is working and I have successfully recorded, saved and loaded a small test session with a few FX and played around with the MIDI editor a bit. Native Linux REAPER is most of the way to being a usable reality, all it needs now is a talented, interested coder to add the finishing touches to WDL as Linux would seem to be something COCKOS are willing to support but not prioritise, yet.

It only took me a minute to install REAPER from the AUR but take note of the editing required to the PKGBUILD mentioned in the only comment on its AUR page.

It's unlikely anyone outside of COCKOS will finish whats needed in WDL because its not used by anything except REAPER, as far as I'm aware.

In the event a Linux/REAPER fan/coder does step up to the challenge it'd be nice to think COCKOS would reward them for their efforts somehow!

Interesting, I didn't know it was still being actively worked on. It would be incredible for a native version to be available. I've always been amazed how well and seamlessly it works in wine but I quickly notice the extra cpu impact of wine.
Will have have to keep an eye out for this one.

This is really nice. I don't use reaper myself but have a few friends who swear by it and it might help collaboration and bring them closer to open source tools.

I've used the 'wine' version since 2.05, and we're at 5.12, and still kickin' it 8)

In all the many dozens of new versions I've used, only 2 had issues where I reverted to
the previus one temporarily. Of course, I rarely updated wine, in that same time period.
I'd like to test wine 1.8x if I get a spare few days. But probably won't. Time is money,
and if it ain't broke, why fix it?

I've just updated the OP to include a link to the landoleet site. I was meant to include that originally then glowrak's post reminded me I left it out.

The fonts look better in this clip than what I get under Arch so maybe I don't have the right font installed?

The Linux REAPER thread on the COCKOS forum is sadly plagued with endless Linux-bashing peppered and cries of how evil and insurmountably hard JACK and the terminal are :(

The terminal is a cool breeze when you want it,
and a sledgehammer when you need it. A timesaver
and a system saver. Schools just suck up taxes,
and spit out drones.

Commander Redmond hath spoken:
'Click it and shut up. Commandz are teh eeeevvvvviiiilllllll...
you don't need no stinkin' freedoms.   '

An opportunity is there for injections of truth.

Tell those freaks to play my song: https://soundcloud.com/grayson-peddie/car-free-village
Tell them that my song is made using Linux. They deserved to be amazed that Linux can do anything! :D

[DISCLAIMER: just my feelings towards others on other platforms]

and that's why I hate when I see Linux stuff ported to Windblows.. not saying we shouldn't but Mac and Winblows users are quick to love the ported Linux stuff but do we see that in return?
Why Reaper? Don't get me wrong, I have it on my Winblows machine as I need it to help a friend out who is just starting to dive into recording for his video based business. Reaper is amazing so so is Ardour, Qtractor, Rosegarden, etc.. Reaper for Linux, does it mean we can now the use of Win VSTs?

just inquiring and trying to see if I'm missing something..

These days, windoze software is much less a need, if your wallet has no moral objection
to buying software, there's at least $2500 worth of fabulous commercial
native linux audio software that is truly world-class. And a dozen really fine
linux-vst and lv2 instruments, and a huge array of fine linux effects.

I have a 15 gig .wine folder, of which 5 gig are Dimension Pro and Sampletank samples,
the rest are vst plugins and standalones that work fine
in reaoer/wineasio, and have for many many years.

Native Instruments plugins with installers allowing XP (generally, dated mid 2011 and earlier)
almost all work fine, Kontakt needing extra ram for samples.
There is an app-verifier from msoft that may work around this,
which I'll test later, supposedly it can make installers think
xp is win7.

Anything requiring a dongle, pace, macromedia or other exxoteeek copy protection
won't work. Good times, and getting better!

If you are referring to free windoze music things, these developers now offer a great range
of free instruments and effects:
Ugo
Krakli
Blue Cat
Melda
AlgoMusic

Oatmeal and Synth1 offer a vast array of presets, and are great
for achieving new sounds. Some search engine skills required
due to passage of time, mortality etc

thanx for the info.. these vsts needing wine or they are native-vsts?

Also, you didn't mention why Reaper over native programs like Ardour and Qtractor?
I wanna make sure I'm using the right stuff...

The point of this thread is that now reaper is also a native linux program. No more wine. It won't run windows binaries, at least not without some hacky VST bridge stuff and that may not even be possible (I never touch the stuff). Its just another option that could possibly help people who have considered using linux for audio to make the switch. Its just like bitwig supporting linux, another commercial player that is supporting our OS. As more companies do so I suspect it will draw the attention of plugin devs. Whether this will generate more open source stuff, we could probably argue all day about it. In fact almost everything I wrote is kinda assuming... Still, I see it as a positive event even though I'm personally not very interested. It is competition for Ardour and Qtractor but loses in the licence category ;)
