[ANN] Musical Artifacts - find presets, configs, sounds

Post by lfz »

Hey everyone, this is a project I've been working on for some months now and now I think it's ready for some beta testing. https://musical-artifacts.com/ is a place to collect free 'musical artifacts', that is, pre-sets, configuration files, soundfonts, etc. make them searchable and taggable and give credit to authors.

For example here are some soundfonts, zyn pre-sets, guitarix tones and .gig files:

https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts?tags=soundfont
https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts?apps=guitarix
https://musical-artifacts.com/artifacts ... ynaddsubfx
https://musical-artifacts.com/?formats=gig

The application is in BETA right, so new features are coming and some bugs are to be expected!

You can look at the source, contribute or file bugs via github https://github.com/lfzawacki/musical-artifacts and also contribute with your own artifacts https://github.com/lfzawacki/musical-ar ... w-artifact

That's it!

Right now it's hosted in a VPS which costs me aprox. U$20 a month to keep running which I'm happy to pay from my pocket. The network bandwidth and disk space are more than enough to host the site right now, but in the future if the site needs to grow a LOT I might look into donations or some kind of sponsorship for the project.

Note than more than a few of the Zyn presets are currently bundled with ZynAddSubFX, the laba170 patches for instance. There is a new bank I've put on the ZASFX git repo that contains some of the single instrument I've found floating. In many of these cases, the author has been a bit careless with levels, and I've tried to moving things toward the center so playing a chord doesn't necessarily send one into the red.

We're already on this. See http://sourceforge.net/p/zynaddsubfx/in ... et-wisdom/

That's great, the correction to the volume levels is something that really makes the presets useful.

I think I'm going to get rid of all the single instruments which you've already added and just registers the packs, while making it clear to users that using the latest Zyn they can get these sounds.

Also here are some presets that that maybe aren't already on the zyn repo:
* Wild Cat in space: http://www.mediafire.com/file/zl26kcsic ... ge_VDX.zip
* KVR presets

Awesome! Looks great too :D

I'm working on a new synth "Helm" (tytel.org/helm) and would *love* a way to submit patches from Helm directly to Musical Artifacts and download directly as well. I think it would really push the community patch building to a new level.
Is there a good way to do that currently?

If not and you're looking for contributors, I'd love to help where I can.

Right now there's a json API that can be used to search and download artifacts, read more here https://github.com/lfzawacki/musical-ar ... umentation

I'm currently working on a simple api_key/api_token pair which you'll be able to use to POST new presets or edit already existing. This way you won't need anything fancy to create new presets from any software, just an HTTP library.

If you want to contribute with code or any other way you can read this page: https://github.com/lfzawacki/musical-ar ... Contribute

Integrating this application with the user and developer community is my main goal, so I'm open to contributions and ideas on the API. I'll keep you posted :)

I'm planning to make some tutorials about playing a Quintar (fretless instrument tuned in fifths).
Can I use your website to post chord schemes, scales etc, made in Lilypond?

Yes, by all means. You can use the description to explain what's in the downloadable file, if you want to host some sound files / images I can help you with that, just send me a PM.

Also if there are more people interested in contributing Lilypond files to the site I might implement a web previewer for the files (I think I saw a project on github which could do that :) )

Awesome! It's working well so far :D
The json query has pretty much everything I want, except for some way to sort them by number of downloads, rating, etc.

Hi

I've ask the very same question then you in the guitarix forum, and my first impression was indeed, cool, create a menu for that and get a online resource to give users a simple preset share interface.
In the mean time, I've learned that https://musical-artifacts.com/ has a lot more to offer. Spoken about the examples, videos, descriptions and comments on the site. So, I've played now with the idea of using webkit to interface the site direct (as it really looks nice and all), instead only fetch the data.
But, at least, I guess the best would be to have both possibility.

Thinking aloud about the sorting by popularity.
Just a simple way for users to "star" or "favorite" a patch bank would be ideal for my usage. Then you could just sending along the number of favorites along with the json info. I like a star method better than a 5-star rating for this sort of thing because i don't think there's any point to rating a patch bank with low stars..

Anyway, you should do whatever you think is best!

Yes, I've put your suggestion on my work pile and I'll probably add a rating system of some sort. A download counter is already active so it's just a matter of time until I add it.

Lots of news coming on the api front, I just need some extra tests now before I put it online.

A question for you tytel and other app developers. Would you like an api which could return some metadata about a file, like for example certain sound parameters in helm's or guitarix's case where the files are simple json files? Would that make sense for app developers?

I'm also thinking about adding an option to list files inside compressed files, so this way you can download a zipped file but know that it contains, e.g., 10 helm patches inside.

Here's an update on the API: https://github.com/lfzawacki/musical-ar ... umentation

More metadata about the artifacts and a way to create/upload files and edit them. Let me know what you think about the API and if the documentation is good enough to experiment with it yourselves. The artifacts will still be held back for moderation and won't show on the site by default, so don't worry about testing it with dummy data.

Waiting for some feedback :)
