I play Bass/Guitar/Keyboard (A bit). I'm really a drummer but I think someone mentioned about windows users just liking Keyboard sounds? To be honest that's fair comment. A really good synthesizer can set you back a whole bunch of dollars.

That is why I want to use soft synths/Vst's etc. Of course it can depend a lot on your influences I suppose but I generally like music with keys for the most part, they fill out everything, a huge Genesis fan I am but there are so many things that influence me in music it wouldn't be fair to say that is all I want...

So what do you guys all play?

guitar... everything else is done by the computer and it's ok but I wish I had the money to buy a bass so I don't have that feel, that computer feel. Most likely it's all in my head knowing that the track is a computer and wishing that some improvisation could take place.
I use Hydrogen for drums and I go nuts with the humanizer to add a not so perfect sound... If I don't, I can't even jam to it.

I think the problem is not the humanizing. But the computer is not responding to the (bio) musician. If I'm jamming with some friends, they are listen to what I do and so fantastic things come out.
But when no friend are around, I'm jamming with myself :D (using Ardour and Hydrogen)

I am not a guitar player - in fact, do not really like the guitar much - perhaps due to the fact that there is so much of it.
I am a flute player, though and I play some percussion, but my main thing is ambient. So I need a complex music system, a sequencer where I can edit all the parameters of sound.

However, due to the fact that not a lot of people seem to be interested in an integrated music environment, I am guessing there are not so many musicians here who do such electronic music as myself - modular approach doesn't really work for it since you always need to have the whole project there and be able to go back and edit any parameter - possible in LMMS, hardly possible out there with a jack environment.

Louigi, i've heard your stuff, and think it's good. I hear you on the modular jack environment. I don't play guitar and my particular use case is orchestral (I used to play in them), so trying to patch together more than one app in linux to do the job is a challenge. In my case, devs are somewhat surprised when i suggest they up their apps from 50 or 100 track maximum, to 500 or 1000. And in the case of LS, the devs were surprised, but highly supportive when i explained the case for being able to access several hundred channels, and not just 99. (They did this in a day, which was much appreciated.)

More than anything else, and this may well be applicable to all those headbangers out there :), great jack session management is our potential answer, and the more apps that can be tweaked to be jack_sessionable, the more chance you and I, and likely many others will have to create big multi app projects and save them in their entirety, on the fly, with one action, then opening them up again, restoring all the previous settings, and/or loaded templates, etc...

Imho, this will take linux audio forward in a big way, immediately, and give you and I, out there in the "twilight zone" of use cases :) a chance to participate in a much easier way, getting more done for much less non-musical downtime.

Of course there are guitar players in this forum. I am one, too and i love using linux as DAW.
Although i prefer using the real sound of my old tube amp and analog effects, i've tried some
of the apps, called in this thread like guitarix when i took my first steps in linux.
I was kind of being forced to use linux, when i began my trainee as IT-specialist.
In the company i am serving in uses linux in almost every section. So i decided to
use it at home, too, for using and understanding it better.
I must say that i've learned using a real DAW first time with linux, because as a trainee i
couldn't afford buying expensive windows and mac software, so i've recorded my music
with audio editors (e.g. audacity) the time i worked with windows.
Now i won't go back. I've just fallen over funkmuscle's contribution:

and i hope that with this more users (especially guitar players) will use linux in the future.

nothing beats the sound, feel and tone of a real amp.... I'm one of the testers for guitarix and now gx_head... major improvements on tone and effects there now...

I just plain hated Windows... I had to learn Windows, Linux and Unix at the same time... Solaris 7, red hat and winNT...
winNT kept crashing while the other 2 rocked... I made linux my home pc but I work in a windows world.

I know that situation. I forgott to say that now the whole company is based on windows.
The clients, the servers (except firewall, web and database servers. they are still linux :) )
have all been infected with evil Micro$oft programs :D But it was a major instruction...
Now, i have to use windows at work and love to use my linux environment at home.
Ironically how things can turn.

I'll have a second (closer) look at it.
The screenshots and description on the project site are really promising,
but i still state, that only a tube amp has a soul, you know

Another guitarist here :) I use Linux for recording because of the advantages. I couldn't care less about software amps. I want my DAW to record wat I put in, not mess with my signal. I put a Pod2 in front of the mixer or, if I can get loud, a mic in front of an amp (doesn't happen often, a good mic is expensive :( )

If you think back to the development of music apps on other platforms it was similar in their time lines as well. The more traditionally "MIDI" instruments were the first target of most computer music software titles with other instruments after though except for audio and studio style effects.

I am intrigued with the idea of using a computer based amp sim and effects chain, in effect I do with my pedal. However it comes down to why do I always bring dedicated hardware on stage at least as a backup at minimum. Dedicated hardware is just better suited for live usage at this point. And since I am typically a stickler for not going nuts in the studio with things I cannot duplicate live I tend to record performances with my own dedicated hardware.

Yeah I will play with things like Rackarack, but it is not my main target.
