Allison Kraus, no contest ! https://youtu.be/E2KlfBvt-sQ .
Even if you can't sing well, sing. Sing to yourself. Sing in the privacy of your home. But sing.

It's not a contest. She is great (and it's spelt Alison Krauss)
Gillian Welch is also wonderful when considering country/bluegrass singers.
I don't have favourites just many singers I like. Did I mention Kacey Musgraves?

Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
Great thread idea!
I've gotten cold shivers down my spine and hair standing up on the back of my neck at various times from these ladies:
Alicia Keys
Mariah Carey (yes, really.... her performance in her early career of 'Vision of Love' on Saturday Night Live was incredible)
Gwen Stefani
Brandi Carlile
Aretha Franklin
Koko Taylor
Big Mama Thornton
Merry Clayton
Clare Torry
Bonnie Raitt
Susan Tedeschi
Minnie Riperton
Gladys Knight
Janis Joplin
There have been many more moments with many more sisters but that's a start I guess..lol

Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
Loleatta Holloway is one of my favourites.
Loleatta Holloway became Disco’s (and house) Most Sampled Artist
Black Box - Right on time.

The original love sensation, why did disco have to die ?

I always knew I liked disco, but these days I know its the funk inspired disco I really like.

Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
I'd have to say Floor Jansen is my favorite comteporary female vocalists right now...classically trained but very flexible in terms of how she can make her voice "fit" into completely different styles. Any Nightwish fans here will know for sure what I mean... . She posted a number of videos on her YouTube channel during the pandemic last year where she performed vastly different songs (stylistically speaking).

Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
With so many styles of music and as many superb artists I would suspect that favorite or favorites would need to be infinite.
For the abstract try Janis Segal in "Like There's No Tomorrow"
Nina Simone for Jazz in everything. Every song she songs becomes a story.
Mrs Miller who makes it impossible to take anything seriously. That is a treasure in these times.
Annie Lennox who astounds me with her strength, endurance, writing talents & sensitivity.
This is a short list excluding so much righteous talent.

Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
I'll add Millie Jackson, great voice, big humor and some great album front pages
Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
Oh god! The first time I heard her, I was rolling on the floor.I Can't Get Started wrote: Mrs Miller
For those who don't know her (as well you shouldn't), she was a California housewife back in the 1960's who was a hobbyist singer. She had an untrained (I would hope) operatic voice, with a negligible sense of rhythmic timing (even for a 1960's middle-aged white woman), dubious pitch control, and a vibrato that was so wide you could throw a toaster through it. You know, the kind of voice that sounds ridiculously "uncool" singing popular music. Needless to say, Mrs Miller's repertoire consisted almost entirely of top 40 pop songs, broadway show tunes, and jazz standards. (She even sang Beatles, and The Supremes, covers). Apparently, she thought she was a good enough singer to book time in a studio to record her pop cover songs. Someone at Capitol Records (a major record label at that time) happened to hear her tape, and he thought it would be a great novelty act. So Capitol signed her to a contract, and put out a record. Depending upon the strength of one's stomach, people were either greatly bemused, or horrified to the point of requiring medical treatment. Her cover of Petula Clark's "Downtown", including a "scat" solo in which she produces a whistling that resembles a parakeet being run over by a garbage truck, actually made the american top 10. She went on to butcher a plethora of pop tunes in several subsequent records before the novelty wore off. But to this day, people still play her recordings to their friends, usually preceded by the phrase "If you think Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music is the worst musical recording ever made, wait until you hear this."
