not 4 to the floor Disco ?

Post by Gps »

While listening to Shannon - Let the music play, I got confused.

My sense of rhythm is generally quite good, I which my sense for pitch was close to that, because don't ask me in what key this track is in.
But

I have figured out its 4/4, ignoring the kick, and focusing on the snare.
But am I right as in this not being a 4 to the floor ?

I remember the first few times I heard this track, many years ago, the weird kick?, made me not really like the track.
But the track grew on me, and its in my playlist.

I may be wrong (since I didn't listen very long to the piece, sorry couldn't ;D ) but to my ears it sounds not unusual at all though mostly used in hard-rock or some heavies, this might well be a very standard slow 8/8 (or 8/4 with a "en l'air" toast), the most unusual thing in it is to not hear it with 2 overdriven axes and tons of agressive Leslied Hammond ;)

So at least I am right , this is a weird beat pattern for disco.

Maybe I need to recreate it in LMMS, to see what I end up with.

Although I should be able to find a midi, because this was once a hit.

Maybe its just a syncopated 4 to the floor ?

Always liked another track of Shannon more. Give me tonight.
But that one also seems to not have your standard 4 to the floor dance beat pattern. ( boom boomclap, boom boomclap)

At 2.50 in, its a normal 4 to the floor for a few seconds, and then it returns to the syncopated beat.

Now lets start an endless discussion if this is disco or not

It fails my definition of disco, because I like to call that boom clap music.
I love certain disco , but I also like to make fun of it, because Its definitely not the same level as Pink Floyd, shine on you crazy diamond.

I thought it had bits of electro and US bass, maybe more hi-nrg than disco, then I looked up Wikipedia and it says dance-pop n freestyle, the former being a post disco/synthpop/etc derivative, the latter being Latin/vocal/electro/Miami bass influenced.

A classic Miami bass n freestyle mix https://youtu.be/rceQGOPqJU4

Here starting circa 19:31 is a possible '70 original of this kind of beat (using somehow slightly different instruments around it ;) ).

But there are zillions, I quoted that one just because just found it out by surprise while following someone following some chain following someone who followed a chain where it was posted and it happened to be >92p100 similar in pattern so tag you're it ;)
I reckon though it's a solid 8 and as such candidate for being in between one third or two off the 70s-80s hardies/heavies/bigrockies prods. (counting out half of the ballads since usually some 12/8 on disguise) it's not that direct when you're accustomed to permanent 4onFloor as likely is very hard to recognize a sequence of bricks in a wall when the red'n'blue spots turn to sunlights and laser attacks :)

Electro, now I am starting to feel young again. I remember having to listen to pirate station to listen to this type of music.

And yes from electro and hip hop I am used to these type of beats. (808 cowbell)

Interesting, so Shannon is probably not really disco.

Planet rock anyone ?

Looking for the perfect beat, hard to believe this is now already 40 years old. (1982)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulsonic_Force
Soulsonic Force (also referred to as Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force) is an American electro-funk and hip hop ensemble led by Afrika Bambaataa who helped establish hip-hop in the early 1980s with songs such as "Planet Rock." They were also influential in the birth of the electro movement in America and helped pave the way for modern dance music styles such as electro-funk as well as the entire Miami bass scene.

In 1982, Soulsonic Force and Afrika Bambaataa released a single "Planet Rock." The song borrowed musical motifs from German electro-pop, British rock and African-American disco rap. All the different elements and musical styles were blended together; and in doing so, offered hip hop as a new vision for global harmony. The song became an immediate hit and stormed the music charts worldwide.[1]

Well that definitely is not disco. But it does have that type of kick pattern. :)

Although not really being a true rock fan, for paranoid you can wake me up any time.

Same vid but at the start. :)
