Did I inspire Jean Michel Jarre? :O

Post by Gps »

While listening to a concert of Jean Michel Jarre, I heard a small piece that reminds of a track I made.

Even if I did inspire him, which I doubt, I would not mind at all.

But the concert at:
1hour 4 min:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLRcJBSsGVw

Mine:

https://soundcloud.com/user586365033/duality-1

Maybe there is hope for me still and one day I will be famous :P

Should I sue Jean Michel Jarre ?

Even if he got his inspiration from my track, he is probably one of the last people I would sue.
Although in this crazy world, I could probably find a lawyer that would do it, I like Jean Michel Jarre.
All his music is on you Tube, and he made an album revolutions, which I at first misunderstood as in rotations.

He wants us to stand up, and me being a yellow jacket protester, how I could I argue him ?

Worst part though, he did a better job hen me

:)

Well my post was not meant as april fools, but should also not be taken to serious.

I do find it funny that around 1.15 mine sounds a bit similar to what Jarre does in that track.

I was hoping for / expecting a few sarcastic remarks though.

Something like, yeah you sound like jarre alright

When I listen to my older tracks, I often get this feeling that it has potential, but it is not really finished.
Too much copy paste, not enough variation. It was the best I could do at that time though.

Well, JMJ has been at it for something like 50 years. Don't give up yet! :D

Yup, Jeanmi has been on an over and over it for almost 50 years and still no sign of any progress so no hopes all barred :D

Been listening to jarre allot. Starting to see / hear a pattern.

There is often a weird kind of percussion, or should I say arpeggio's used for the rhythm part.

Then strings on top of it but not in a Disco / edm / rock ? way.

Its probably more in a classical music way, but since I know almost nothing about classical music, I could be wrong there.

Can you say in which track?

JMJ is the son of film composer Maurice Jarre, who studied percussion as his main instrument in the conservatory. This might explain some things :D

I did not know his dad had studied percussion, but that probably does explain it.

examples :
Oxygene IV

Equinox 4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W18VtbMEbZ0

An example of his newer stuff.
Equinoxe infinity
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTnP6Mp ... A6oD7CmzXg

I love it, but to me it sounds totally not EDM / pop music wise.

The concert is from 2017. The song in question, "Immortals" is from Jarre's Elecrtonica 1: The Time Machine from 2015.

The only way to settle this wether it's a ripoff or not is to determine who wrote which first... unless Jean-Michel really used a time machine to plageriaze your song! :o At least, he did beat you on the release date.

I seriously doubt its a rip off, and if I did inspire him it only makes me smile.

I did make mine before I had heard the Jarre version.

Probably my track needs a rework. Listening to mine, just now and I think I can do better now.

More chord progression and add some effects, like one of the people on soundcloud suggested.

This tracks also make me wonder if I should think a lot less when making music, and more just do/try something.

In general everybody is allowed in my book to get inspired by me.
The only think I would like is people telling me I did inspires them.

Maybe there is a Jarre in me, I remember an interview were he said, he would like to hear remixes from his tracks.
That did start remixes of Jarre tracks, and I know why. A lot of artist and mix people were like, we don't touch Jarre out of respect.

He is one of the people who did make electronic music popular.

He had a rough start when he tried to release Qxygene, most record companies were like, that is not music, there is no singing, to name one thing.
In one interview he said one small dutch record company was like lets try this, I like it.
In a more recent interview though he said it was a french person.

Maybe his story changes depending on the nationality of the interviewer?

At least one track from Madis is definitely Jarre inspired.

I tried to find the LMMS file, and I have problem. :(

There is no duality file in my home folder.

So has the file gone to the digital hunting grounds, or does it have a different name ?

Maybe I need to start from scratch, but I have no idea on how I made it and or which synths I used.

I think I hear a synth arpeggio.....

Maybe I need to start my previous pc, to see if there are still lmms files there.

Just need to vent some frustration.

Been searching thoroughly at my pc, and the original LMMS files of duality are gone. :(

To some extent I don't get it. I have a folder called LMMS finished.
All files I uploaded to soundcloud are there or at least in my project folder, but not duality.

Downloaded my track from soundcloud and installed Sonic Visualiser.

I was always worried this would happen, and here I am.

There is a slim change its still on my previous pc, but I remember doing a fresh Suse install after I had all the files transferred.
I have no idea on how I made the track, I only remember something about an effect because I had something layered.
A happy little accident.

The big question for me, will I be able to re create this track from scratch.
I think it has potential but its unfinished. I could however not do better at the time I released it.

I might have to start a new topic and ask for help, but first wanna try if I can recreate the probably synth arpeggios.
Also figure out how sonic visualiser, can show piano roll like notes. I have done this in the past, but never would have thought, I would be doing it on my self created music. Also will have to upload it to some site to figure out key and bpm.

Sigh

If you where worried, then was the time to make backups.

I had a similar problem with MusE, after trying the latest version the ~/Muse directory vanished, which is where all my projects are. In this case though it was just a new manifestation of the MusE symlink bug, coz that directory was symlinked to elsewhere, and the elsewhere still existed, just the symlink got deleted.

No idea if LMMS has a similar bug, or if you had any symlinks in the path of your projects directory.

I prefer to be known as a figment of the 'nets imagination, living in the future, waiting for the rest of you to catch up.

I can't blame LMMS for this.

I have for some time a folder called LMMS backup.
I never store older and finished project in the working directory.
A fresh install of LMMS might wipe the working directory, I have seen this happen.

I also have a back up of my lmms files on my windows hard disk.
Duality is not there either.

Pretty sure this is a user error, nobody to blame but myself.

Need to boot my previous pc, and pray, and check a hard disk I ones replaced, because it started to act up.
Previous pc also was dualboot Linux and opensuse.
I did also on that pc have my lmms files on both hard disk, but I also remember cleaning up on that pc.

Bring in the dancing girls :)

I booted my previous pc, booted windows 7, and guess what I found Duality.mmpz

I am almost going insane of joy. :P

My back up systems works. (having the lmms files both on the Linux and Windows hard-disk)
