Strumming (no I can't play guitar)

Post by Gps »

I can't get my head around strumming.

It has to do with me ones wanted to cover Curtis Blow - The breaks. (And me never knowing when to quit.)

The guitar player is strumming, and I can't understand how this would look in a piano roll in a Daw. ( lmms)

This vid shows exactly the part I don't get, which probably has to do with me not knowing how to play a guitar or strumming in detail.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qj30Tx3V3s

I understand chords on a piano / keyboard.

What I also think I get, his Left hand is playing chords.

His right hand though

Is he hitting multiple strings ? which in a piano roll would give me notes starting one after another?

I cant get my head around him hiting multiple strings, and playing chords.
Or should I say how to translate this in to a piano roll.

Is this maybe only possible through a guitar vst that supports strumming?
Can't recall the name right now, but have seen it. Was it ample guitar ? The bottom right corner has a strum piano roll.

Do I maybe need to make two tracks? Quantisation set to 1/192.
One track being the strings played (the strumming), second track the chords ? :?

The more I think about this, the more I think I should see if I can get that guitar vst working that supports strumming.

I forgot a made this "Chord Strum" plugin for Linux, It's a DSSI, so you need a Linux program that can load those plugins (Muse, Ardour, Carla). There's a readme file can explains its use.

Thank you I will have a look at it.

Not sure if LMMS can, but I do have Carla in LMMS.

Thats also how I got amsynth working in lmms, but sadly we cant yet in LMMS automate carla stuff.

There is a strum plugin in the midifilter LV2 plugin collection.

A strum in practice is a really fast arpeggio which sounds like a chord. In this type of funk strumming there are things which are difficult to imitate, it is a very regular playing yet there are some dynamics (uneven strokes, accentuated notes, muting, ghost notes) which would be very hard to replicate in a piano roll.

Maybe a complex enough plugin would replicate some aspects of strumming but I think your best bet is to use a guitar sample.

I did find the vst that can do it, although I do not know yet if the free one can strum.

ample guitar

Here is a guy using it in cubase.

I also found a midi file, of Kurtis Blow - The Breaks, and It makes my head hurt.

I am probably over thinking it, but in the midi file I don't see what I would expect. Three notes starting shortly after each other.

At least this guy is doing what I am expecting.

Next vid is of an LMMS beta version, strumming and humanisation.
The two things I miss in LMMS. I can't play, nor sing in tune, so recording live music is not something I personally miss in LMMS.
For me its good enough it can record midi.

If you think this may help, have at it. I'll leave it up for 3 days.
The drum part in the midi file i found needs some love. It's not so great. :(

Thank you I just download the zip file.

Looks like we found the same midi file, but I think your lmms version will help me.

It sounds pretty good. and this should help me.

Will also see if we can use that vst on wine, which comes as an .exe file.

I remember having issues last time I tried it but that was on leap. I am now on tumbleweed, which gives the latest wine version.
This is for now plan b though. :)

Been watching that vid again and I am starting to notice something.

How his left hand, goes on and off the strings of the guitar.

If only I would understand what this means in terms of what notes are played.

It might be easier to learn to play guitar....

The first video was a good one but I disagree on the wah pedal, that's more of a disco sound (even if it's used in funk and funk rock). I think a dry guitar sound, like that used by Catfish Collins and Nile Rodgers, is the best for funk: it really is a percussive way of playing guitar.

Oh yeah, to keep it simple, only watch up to the 4:42 mark. Sorry...

There is more to this, then Kurtis blow.

Rappers Delight, the not sampled, but replayed, good times bassline.

Once tried to cover that one too, and got stuck at the lead guitar part. Found a midi file that did not sound horrible, but not really the same either.

I like disco and house in general, but found out its the disco leaning towards funk, I really like.
Thats also how house started, Disco funk mixes with a drum computer to spice up the beat.

If you tube is working tomorrow, I will watch those vids.
Right now its down.

I might have to learn some guitar playing basics, to understand what is happening note wise. :)
