Hey,
I´m searching for a player which is able to play 20 channels on 20 ouputs. I just need the player, no recording, no mixing, no effects, no filter. There are pieces like the Alesis HD24 or the Fostex D2424LV, but that´s way to expensive and much more than I need.
I don´t want to realize it with a PC and Audio-Interface, I want a simple player.
Anybody knows something like that?
Thanks and regards

While perhaps overkill, your best bet might be something like Ardour. You won't use most of its functionality, but its power/flexibility will come in handy.Troubadix wrote:I´m searching for a player which is able to play 20 channels on 20 outputs. I'm not sure simpler multi-track players like Audacity would be up to the job.

Hey raboof,
sorry, but you got me wrong. I don´t refer to a solution under Linux. Ardour3 in fact DOES make it. But I want a piece of hardware doing that. Like a MP3 - Player, but with 20 channels. I need it for an installation, which will stay for a couple of days, so I don´t want to put a PC-System there.
This is after all not a Linux-question, but I thought that maybe someone round here knows something about that.

Aaah gotcha - not sure, perhaps someone else.Troubadix wrote:I want a piece of hardware doing that. (...) This is after all not a Linux-question, but I thought that maybe someone round here knows something about that.
You could probably convince a raspberry pi with a set of cheap USB soundcards to do that (if you don't care about sound quality too much), but that'd be a small project on its own .

You probably want a hard disk recorder, check this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_recorder.
They're becoming sort-of vintage, now that using a pc is up to the task.
Maybe you can find a good deal on ebay or something like that.

Yes, that´s right. But the problem is, that most of them doesn´t have a line-out for every channel. They are more designed to mixdown their channels to 5.1 or just stereo.emarsk wrote:You probably want a hard disk recorder, check this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_recorder.
The Alesis would do it, but it´s still 800,-€ and more on ebay. I thought it could be a little cheaper, but maybe that´s the price I have to pay.
Re: 20+ Channel Player
When I was studying as a sound engineer we had at school one of those machines (sorry, I don't remember which one), and it wasn't designed to mix directly to stereo, but to send EACH track separately to an external analog mixer: each channel on the mixer was setup to output to one track on the machine while recording, and to input from the same track while mixing. The stereo mix was then sent again to two more track on the machine to be recorded.
Maybe different models behave differently, I never had any more experience with that stuff, never even saw one since then.

It depends which model you get.Troubadix wrote:The Alesis would do it, but it´s still 800,-€ and more on ebay. I thought it could be a little cheaper, but maybe that´s the price I have to pay.
The upgraded HD24 XR's (with the high end converters) go for much more than the HD24's. HD24 prices vary but it's possible to find them for around 400 Euro both in Germany and the UK.

Keep in mind that these units are a bit noisy when the internal drives are spun up.
