I am surprised that nobody mentioned, that the original thread was 10 years old.

We are talking about IRC. It is over 30 years old, so 10 years old thread is ok.

I don't think so. Feel free to join, that channel is pretty active.

yep, very active and very open to using any tools you want (though we'll probably try to convince you to use linux and open-source stuff). :D

re freenode channels;

#opensourcemusicians is fairly active but often off-topic from music or AV/IT things and occasionally a bit toxic

#lad is active but development/programming orientated with a low tolerance for off-topic

##audio and ##music-electronics are low to occasional medium content not enough mass for constant chat

#jack #lv2 and #archlinux-proaudio are active, as are #edmproduction, #zrythm, #ardour and #alsa

#dataflow (Pure Data), #openav, #audacity, #surgesynth, ##radio, ##rtlsdr and #redditaudio and #hamradio are worth a mention

##electronics is interesting but with a somewhat occasionally toxic

#linuxmusicians and #lau are pretty much dead

i would love a channel that is like '#osm' but strictly on-topic messages. i prefer the umbrella term of 'free' over 'open'. i'd like it to be medium/format agnostic as well as OS-agnostic (though guess it'd be heavily *nix leaning). it would be a generalist hub chat channel, with links to speciality channels and sites in the topic.

i'm thinking #freeavit, which i have created. come join and be a hub with me. when i get more time, i would like to set up a news aggregation system to associate with the channel.
they/them (nb/gq/tg, ta)
wiki.thingsandstuff.org/Audio and related pages - a collection of mostly Linux and free links (OpenID auth for anti-spam, try DW)
Linux Digital Audio and Music Workstation Comparison Matrix - collaborative Google Sheet

I don't think that any irc channel today can be alive with only on-topic messages. Not enough people to keep channel alive with on-topic stuff.

And what would be definition of on-topic?
