Behringer issues
I have purchased a Behringer UMC202HD as I found a post on this forum that it worked out of the box with Linux . Running Ubuntu studio 21.10 and yes indeed worked out of the box. After a nightmare with a sound blaster card recording and playback was good too hear. On the bad side all of the playback skips. I'm not sure if it records that way but, I am sure it's there on playback. I have 2 other sound cards and when I play a you tube video with them no issues. When I use the Behringer , skips. Something about the USB interface but I don't know what. Stuck.

Re: Behringer issues
Hmmmm. Somebody else here on this forum just returned the 202's bigger brother, the 404, because of the same problems. I have the 404 too and do not experience problems, but then again I don't use it for (continuous) Music playback...
When you use the Behringer, are a lot of applications like a DAW and/or Windows VST's bridged via Wine open?
Have you tried using the 202 with only Youtube open en nothing else?

This thread in case you missed it.....

I would be curious if you have the same "clock source 41 is not valid, cannot use" message in your logs.
Behringer may have shipped a faulty batch of devices out.

Re: Behringer issues
It seems it could also be implicit feedback issue.

I also recently bought a UMC202HD and had the same issue. To fix choppy playback you have to load the snd-usb-audio kernel module with the implicit_fb=1 option. You can do it by creating a file in the /etc/modprobe.d/ directory (you can give it any name, but it has to end with .conf) with the following content: options snd_usb_audio implicit_fb=1, then reboot your system. Hope this helps!

Bloody hell, what a SnAFU! Would never have guessed that solution. Told the guy in the other forum topic. Hope it works ...bluzee wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 10:04 pm It seems it could also be implicit feedback issue.

Re: Behringer issues
The 202 probably needs the workaround mentioned above. In short: (see Reddit) load the snd-usb-audio kernel module with the implicit_fb=1 option. You can do it by creating a file in the directory:andrewwt27 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 16, 2022 1:19 am Yes I was running only you tube when having the issues. more research needed.
Code: Select all
/etc/modprobe.d/
Code: Select all
options snd_usb_audio implicit_fb=1

Re: Behringer issues
I don't see in the post that the fix listed worked. Also I wouldn't know how to change kernel options. When i tried the commands listed in the post I received error system in use. Would I have to boot with a live version to make the changes , so the system would no t be in use? Does the 204 work without issues I could upgrade? It seems that sound cards that list Linux support don't exist. Going by recommendations I have seen in this forum Is what started this. I have spent the better part of 2 months trying to get Ubuntu studio to be my studio. So far I am on my third sound card without joy. I have used Ubuntu since 2007 and I have no intentions of stopping now. someone must know what card I can use without sound quality issues. The Ubuntu documentation on sound cards is old, even ancient in computer terms. My machine is old by computer standards and I hope to upgrade sometime this year. The latest thing I have tried to fix the issue is I added high speed USB 3.0 ports via a PCMCIA card, even though the Behringer specs only call for USB 2.0. I figured faster ports would not be any worse. But sadly no better.

Re: Behringer issues
If you want to test this you can issue these commands....
Now reboot and try the device. If it does not help you can revert this option with....
These devices used to work perfectly. Just plug in and use. I'm not sure what has changed. Perhaps with the chip shortage they have made substitutions.
Code: Select all
sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/UMC202.conf
Code: Select all
sudo echo "options snd_usb_audio implicit_fb=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/UMC202.conf
Code: Select all
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/UMC202.conf

Re: Behringer issues
That's what @bluzee and I told you in out posts above.
??? Never heard of that error. If you want help on this you should post the messages on the command line (between code braces).andrewwt27 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 17, 2022 10:15 pm When i tried the commands listed in the post I received error system in use.
Nope.andrewwt27 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 17, 2022 10:15 pm Would I have to boot with a live version to make the changes , so the system would no t be in use?

Re: Behringer issues
I tried bluzees solution and received this:
ndy@andy-h61mh:~$ sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/UMC202.conf
[sudo] password for andy:
andy@andy-h61mh:~$ sudo echo "options snd_usb_audio implicit_fb=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/UMC202.conf
bash: /etc/modprobe.d/UMC202.conf: Permission denied
andy@andy-h61mh:~$
After that didn't work I tried to sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/UMC202.conf
That opened an empty file of that name. I then added options snd_usb_audio implicit_fb=1. Closed rebooted no help.
I don't need attitude just assistance. and am doing the best I can. I think I am going to give up on this card and return it. I now just need a device that works without issue. Windows and mac are not options to me. There must be something that just works and won't require I re-mortgage my house. Thanks for the help all.

Re: Behringer issues
I expect some one will sort out the issue with these eventually, but I agree it's probably better to return it while the window is open. It's discouraging as I would normally recommend Behringer based on my experience.
The Focusrite Scarlett interfaces are generally reported working well. Some of them may need a fairly new kernel to be installed to have the proper support. From what I understand the 2 channel interface should work out of the box. I had an older Scarlett Solo at one point and it worked without issue.
I have a Mackie ONYX Artist interface that works out of the box. I find the pre amp on it to be a little weaker but other wise it's fine.
I'm sure there are many others.

It helps if you put command line between [code) tags for readability. This error:andrewwt27 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 19, 2022 1:08 am I tried bluzees solution and received this:

Anyway, in the reddit topic that was mentioned, some say that the stuttering can be solved, some say it can't. The topic starter in reddit also had choppy playback in Windows so there must have been something wrong with the device since his probs were gone after using the 202's biger brother: the Behringer UHD204HD.
I agree with @bluzee: I think you'd better buy another audio device until the Linux community knows for sure that the B. 202 still works flawlessly. However, the Focusrite interfaces that many Linuxers use may need some Linux configuration. Since your phrase "I don't need attitude just assistance and am doing the best I can." seems to imply that you are not having much fun with tinkering with Linux that might not be your best option either.
BTW We are not giving you "attitude" but simply assistance. I don't know what might have led you to think otherwise.

Re: Behringer issues
I did the procedure multiple times and the chances that I miss typed my password in all of them is remote. My comment about attitude was about being scolded by the moderator for not trying the suggested solution. 1. I didn't understand what needed to be done. 2. I hadn't yet seen the suggestion from bluzee. Anyway I still want to thank everyone that tried to help me. I have ordered a scarlet device and we will see. If the problem persists I have a bigger problem with my box.

Again attitude. "It helps if you put command line between [code) tags for readability. This error:". What does that mean? I don't know what you are saying but somehow I feel like I should have known.
