Hey peeps!

I'm semi linux literate having used it on and off since fedora 3... Currently running ubuntu 19.04... with mixed results... lol

I like many genre's of music, play Guitar, Bass and re-learning keys after a long time away (if i can get midi working! :D)... I also play gameboys... lol... and various other oldschool computers...

I've done recording in the past, I've tried Ubuntu studio but can never get jack working (get it working fine in stock ubuntu... Who knows...)
I will have plenty of questions.... which will start shortly after this! :D

Welcome, Pix Retro! We are glad you are here.

JACK can be quite temperamental in my experience, but having a decent audio interface helps a lot. When I was trying to get JACK running on whatever random internal sound card my computer came with I had very little luck with it. But when I bought an external USB audio interface (a 2nd gen Scarlett 2i2) I got it working just fine and have had no problems using it on multiple machines on different versions of Mint.

Looking forward to hearing your recordings!

Lol... Thanks for the welcome! And it'll probs be a long while before I'm happy enough to post stuff... My musical range and interest is very varied and definitely not to everyones taste... I'm definitely more interested in electronic stuff at the moment... And being a retro gamer and chiptune fan there's probably going to be a few computers involved!

One thing I am wondering about... The low latency kernal.... Is it still essential? Just I use my pc fro graphics work too and the kernal stops me using the correct drivers... I read somewhere that it low latency kernal isn't as necessary or even needed... Does having a good audio interface help with that?

Thanks!

Most people now-a-days say: "No". :)

Good luck!

If you have only an onboard audio card you'll probably want at least a low-latency kernel. It's in the standard Ubuntu repos.

Results with machines may vary of course.

Another thing, you'll only need low latency when recording with mic/line in/hardware midi.

yeah, that was my issue... I was installing the nvidia drivers fine, then insptalling the low latency kernal and they don't play well together...

but as i'm buying a audio interface i'll probably ditch my sound card and just use that...

Almost any usb sound module will be better than the onboard sound system.
