Hi from Germany

Post by Musicteacher »

Hi,

I´m from Germany. I do music both privately and as a profession (teacher). I sing, play piano and guitar (both acoustic and electric).

I have been using computers for music for a very long time, starting with Cubase on Atari ST in the late 80s.

While I use Linux for everything else (my other subjects are math and computer science) my music-production is mostly windows-based at the moment. I own licenses for Sibelius 7.5 and Cubase Pro.

At the moment I am trying out music software on Linux and I am quite thrilled about the progress that music on linux has made in the last 10 years or so!

Looking forward to interesting discussions on this board,

Andreas

Welcome Andreas.
You'll find music software on Linux is very much a moving target and improving all the time.

I played a bit with buffer sizes today. With my M-Audio Delta 1010LT I can go as low as 32 bit buffer, which gives less than one millisecond latency (tried this with pianoteq).

That´s really cool!

Welcome,

have fun discovering the free audio subculture. ;-)

For audio I can recommend AVLinux. The AVLinux User Manual can also be useful in general.
Not intended as a change of distribution. Rather, because it's a "live audio/video distribution" and ~everything that goes with Linux: have a look. Many programs are already included or can be easily installed. Audio is almost everything is optimized, only possible. Subsequently enter the limits.conf.

For school, I can offer you skolelinux (= Debian EDU) recommended.

Cheers
