Hiya~ Ubuntu 16.04 / Reaper user here
Hey~ glad to be here~ just thought I'd make an introductory post; I'm a piano player on Ubuntu 16.04 with Reaper through WINE as my current DAW - although I'm having serious issues with it (see: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=182307)... nice to meet you all~ :>

Your recording needs are quite simple, is a native Linux DAW like Ardour not able to do what you want? The excellent Pianoteq piano VST also comes in 2 linux formats (LV2, LinuxVST) and works well with Ardour. Reaper and Windows VST can work on Linux but is a terribly non-optimal and a VERY shaky foundation to base your Recording setup on.

Well I got it to work now and I already made my first song (it also only took like 5-10 minutes to write lol)

Don't use WinAPI emulators like WINE to use DAWs because of performance penalty. I think currently you have no problem to switch to another DAW that is natively supported under Linux. I would recommend Ardour or QTractor.
Don't listen folks that say you to 'switch to win or mac'. These ones in most cases didn't do anything that makes sound producing easier (plugins, tools, DAWs etc.), even for Win or Mac. They just consume VSTs and AUs that already have been done by somebody else. The main reason why Linux audio lags behind in development is the low demand for products under this platform.

I mean my current set-up works excellently for my purposes so why spend more money? Or even more time learning another DAW?
Once Reaper has a stable linux build [looks to be on the cards] I'll probably switch over to that though.
Latency doesn't affect me since I'm listening to my own piano's output rather than the output from my DAW when I am recording, and the only other thing I'm doing is making mixes. And I found that lowering the latency if I want to isn't too hard, should I want to do it... iirc I can get it down to a few ms of latency without any crackling anyway.~

I like playing around with various VSTs, and quite a few of them perform just fine with Wine. In addition to Reaper, there's LMMS, FeSTige and FSThost, all which manage VSTs quite well (although a VST that runs well in one host may give problems in a different host).
There are also other "layers" available, similar to Wine but I've not yet tried them, such as CrossOver: https://www.codeweavers.com/products/cr ... x/features
The list of native linux synths/samplers is certainly growing though. I have more than 50 showcased on my website!

Awesome! Know of any good pianos I would be able to use natively then? If you do then I can make the transition pretty smoothly once a native reaper release appears, most likely.

list of really usable sampled instruments here
http://www.bandshed.net/sounds/sfz/
piano included
you'll need an sfz player, Linux sampler works for that.
Setting up linuxsampler with a DAW is a bit quirky.
Good tutorial here : http://libremusicproduction.com/tutoria ... m-together
Or when using wine https://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando/

The MDA plugins include a nice piano, and some variations: https://sourceforge.net/projects/mda-vst/
