hey therem from germany...i had a dream...

Post by madeluxe »

my beloved macbook died after eight years of heavy use with protools/logic/ableton and rme fireface800. i was abled to make liveband-recording with 32tracks simultaniously.. i had a great time. but after that long time with osx i wanted something new. i wanted learn again, how to work with a computer and so my new way was linux. ubuntu/unity to be precise exactly. so far everything is very nice.
i enjoy gimp, inkscape, blender as creative-tools. the openoffice package for daily work.
i love, to configure my setup, like i want. and when i wanted to play my old command&conquer files, i discovered wine and in 1.9.14 it do a great job for me.
even installing ableton was just some clicks. and it runs. my babyface runs with jack.
and then ableton --> pulseaudio --> pulseaudio-jack-modul --> jack
BUT now the dream!
i dream about running ableton with low latency, because the delay between screen and sound, and delay between play a note on keyboard and play the the sound, is not acceptable. i found out, wineasio could be the answer, but how can i install the package without running over kxstudio-repos?
and has it to be wine-rt?
wine-rt dont run with ableton9, but with wine 1.9.14 it runs great.
everytime, i install wineasio, it changes my wine1.9.14 to wine-rt(1.8)...
i understand, that for some this is a noob-questian, what i really am, when it comes to creative audio on linux...
thanks for reading! and i hope for some answers.
best,
markus

Hello from Die Niederlande!

Maybe Play on Linux might be a solution here.
It allows you to run a Windows app with it's own wine version. It's in the Ubuntu repos but you can download a deb too.
https://www.playonlinux.com/

Just brainstorming here.
Install wineasio, just let the wine-rt install.
Install playonlinux
From playonlinux install ableton and choose an appropriate wine version.
Tricky part. Register wineasio in the wine version ableton uses.
Make a beautiful noise!

I still advice you to use the kxstudio repos
