hello from Glasgow Scotland

Post by dead fly collection »

this is freaking me out. i think i may be on the verge of the greatest day of my adult life. i dont actually use linux yet but i've got my Ubuntu CD in my hand and i was about to put it in my Windows PC then i thought, i better check and see if this is right. i'm scared!!!

anyway,,, a bit about me.
My name is Waz, i play drums in my super band who i love dearly, Super Adventure Club (http://www.myspace.com/superadventuremusic). I create my own, more avaunt-grade, music too (http://www.myspace.com/deadflycollection) (although i havn't put any of my new stuff up for quite some time), i'm the editor of a music/art real PRINTED fanzine called Muckle Sandwich (http://www.myspace.com/mucklesandwich) and for money i teach music at a collage in Edinburgh, Scotland.

I am a huge fan of Creative Commons licensing for music, i've written a blog about it here... http://blogsavethequeen.blogspot.com/

and through reaserch into Creative Commons, GNU, FSF, etc etc i've discovered LINUX.

i run logic and reason on my mac, i use a Nord modular to freak myself out with possibilities but i have an old PC that does nothing so i'm gonna teach myself Linux. with some help from you guys. sorry!

cheers for having me,
all the best

Welcome. Put that cd in your pc!

What do you want to use Linux for? Desktop, audio?
If it's only the latter I suggest you to install 64studio 3 (beta) It's based on Ubuntu Hardy and optimized for audio production.

www.64studio.com

Other suggestion might be Ubuntu Studio 9.04

Welcome! I've been a member here only for a short while, but I love the site, and I'm sure you will too!

I am also someone who unexpectedly moved to Ubuntu Linux, and I use it regularly for my music needs. Please, if you find the transition to Linux difficult, feel free to contact me! I am no clever programmer, just a musician with no money! I am the expert on making Ubuntu understandable for people who don't understand computers

All the best!

hi guys, thanks for the warm welcome!
i'm very busy at work but i'll get a chance to install some sort of Linux next weekend. should i use ubuntu to figure out how linux works or should i just jump right to using some music specific linux operating system like the 'studio' one suggested above.

the only reason i keep banging on about ubuntu is because it seems to be the most widely used. is there much difference between it and these ones you suggested?

to answer the question above, i'm not looking to use it for general desktop purposes, i just want to use it for music purposes.

thanks again for the support!

For music propose, try 64studio 3 (beta), based on Ubuntu Hardy.

The point of Ubuntu (the word comes from a Zulu concept of fellow humanness) is that it is aimed at people who are not very good with computers. I am one of them, and thus use it! I would recommend using 64studio, because it is based on Ubuntu, and then just asking someone here for help if you get stuck.

All you need to keep in mind when switching from Windows to a Linux distribution is that it will not, and does not, work like Windows. Otherwise, you should be fine!

A good site to search for help when you get stuck is http://www.ubuntuforums.org and the solutions you find there will also work on 64studio!

Sorry, but I feel compelled to fix this sentence:
All you need to keep in mind when switching from Windows to a Linux distribution is that it will not, and does not, work like Windows. Otherwise, you should be fine!
It should read:
All you need to keep in mind when switching from Windows to a Linux distribution is that it will not, and does not, work like Windows. Therefore you should be fine!

It's better to use the 64studio user mailinglist or the forums. Info on ubuntuforums.org sucks a lot of times...
