I hope it went well last night. I was finishing my track for the Libre Music Challenge or I would have checked in.

A few points we discussed in the last meeting:
  • A brief insight on drum programming and DrumGizmo by @merlyn
  • How much time a person need to learn about most of the Ardour's features?
  • The all time favorite subject of the meeting: "Do we really need CPU hungry plugins to make cool sounds?"
  • Audio software and plugins life cycle - The eternal struggle to make software stay alive and working VS developing new shiny toys
  • The current state of older and newer LV2 plugins
  • Summer has arrived (in the Northern Hemisphere) 8)

One thing that came up was that I thought there was a bug in Ardour 6.7. I left Ardour open overnight and in the morning the DSP load was 100%, there were tons of xruns reported, and my computer locked up.

This has been fixed in Ardour 6.8. In the release notes there is a mention of a memory leak being fixed, which I think is what this was.

tl;dr

Ardour 6.7 -- bad
Ardour 6.8 -- good

A few more tidbits from last week's meeting:

- Drum Gizmo's "round robin" sample usage capability
- DSP load vs. CPU load
- the current trend of considering of certain apps to be "the industry standard" based simply upon what other musicians tell them, rather than critically thinking on a app-per-app basis, based on personal needs and the specific capabilities/limitations of the app in question.

Even though the UEFA 2020 finals (Italy vs. England) are tomorrow, the meeting is still on, as usual! (I'll be multi-tasking..) :D

Another nice discussion last week. Talked about WaveEdit, Drops and Xterminator, among other things.

I'll be checking in about an hour or so late tomorrow nite.

Hope everyone's having a great summer (or winter, depending on where you are :D ) and hope to see you folks tomorrow at 6pm GMT!

Just a quick update on last week's meet-up:
- talked about Robin Gareus's "audio-to-midi" script available in Ardour. Very promising!
- the idea of a Libre Music Challenge that requires putting music to a video!
- looked at some online resources that provide royalty-free video
- the "midi-through" port is your friend! :)

Until Saturday at 6pm GMT.....

Another nice Saturday evening chat with fellow linux-for-music musicians!

A few points discussed this round:

Qt5Ct: giving your Qt5 apps a more personalized appearance! :)
Tenacity: an interesting alternative to Audacity!
Pipewire: another interesting project, aimed at managing Jack/Pulseaudio all in one.
Xhip: a really nice-sounding software synth with FM, subtractive and soundshaping capabilities. Works very well even on older (ie. 15-year-old) 32-bit PCs!
Qmidimonitor: a very lightweight app that displays MIDI signals; would like to see a bit more "standardized" output features, such as time, notes in "C4" format, and recognition of MIDI signals such as aftertouch. A way to export the data as a midi file would make it quite complete, imo!
Skins for software synths: is anyone doing anything interesting here? Synths like WhySynth might look really cool with a "makeover." To each his own, of course. But skinning options make using virtual instruments all the more fun, for sure! :)

Until next Saturday! (I'll be checking in a bit later, around 8 GMT, fwiw..)
