LNXMuSCNS video meetings on Saturday / 6pm GMT / 8pm CEST / 14.00 EDT

Post by briandc »

Hi everyone,
after our (12th?) weekly chat meeting, I thought I'd make this thread to cover all future meetings.
The time (at least for now) is Saturdays at 6pm GMT, and the link to participate is: Linux Musicians Weekly Meeting.

As always, all are welcome and encouraged to join in. It's a great way to share experiences, ask questions, solve problems, help others, and of course.. have fun!

This thread might also be a good place to note any meeting time changes, topics for discussion (it's an informal, cafè-like atmosphere where you can come and go as you please, and discuss just about anything you want), etc.

TTFN!

Hope to see you all next week!

During the last meeting @briandc brought up the need to record midi without using a DAW or a sequencer.

It worked using arecordmidi command but i was thinking about using something that is JACK native because I remember something like that existed... and I found it:
https://github.com/zynthian/jack-smf-utils (The original software is not maintained anymore, this is a fork)

Thanks for noting this, LAM!
I don't know how many distros are including this app but it looks like a good extra to have, for those not using ALSA.
Either way, having a light app to record MIDI output is really nice for those of us who like to do live recording without necessarily using a DAW.

Thanks!! :)

Sending a big thanks out to @LAM , @merlyn , @rghvdberg and @PieterPenninckx for another lovely evening linux-musicians chat!
As usual, a variety of topics covered over the course of the evening, such as: LinVST and Yabridge; using the keyboard without the mouse; various styles of jazz ..... and reviewing the features of my 80's-reminiscent Alesis Keytar Midi Controller! ;)

Right! Perfect for sampling and adding to an audio sample pack for use in the next Libre Music Challenge! :D
(Hey, there's an idea... create a "sample challenge" where people can submit their own, homemade samples (maybe vote on the best ones?), and make a "linux musicians sample pack" for download here on the forum! )

Anyone interested?

Hi @briandc,

there is a repository on GitHub aiming to create a Libre sample pack: https://github.com/TheSmallTeaBoi/the-libre-sample-pack

Anyway, your idea of a Libre Sample Challenge could be interesting. :D

@LAM Ok. I'll be checking in briefly just to see what's up...

Just a few notes about (some of) what was discussed last week:
- when did you start using linux for music purposes?
- the easy (and the hard) ways to use linux for making music
- Managing your sound card and sound server
- Running "audio adaptor" to manage multiple sound cards
- Reasons for using linux for making music
- The need for a good arpeggiator app for linux!

Hope to see you all in a few hours! :)
