But having a chat room 24/7 doesn't help to get people together, imo.
Yes, that's probably the best thing. To save bandwidth (and carbon emissions) and to make sure that people don't just pop in, see that nobody is around at that particular time and leave.

I think @Michael Willis had a good idea but we could set up two evening meetings, one for the west hemisphere and the other for the east hemisphere. Each meeting should last 3 hours to allow people from slightly different timezones to join. I think this solution would cover many cases, and if we do it on the weekends it would be even better because everyone from all over the world would have a good chance to join.

Can we come up with some possible times/days?
Personally my weekends are usually flexible. I'm on GMT +1, (Rome time).

Brian
Might have been mine, sorry. And proved your point about using the chat room as a lazy lobby.

2 regular 3-hour slots sounds practical to me.

Me too.
Here's a proposal: one meeting on Saturday and one on Sunday, from 6pm-9pm, GMT. (once a month?)

So for France, Italy, Germany, etc, 7-10pm.
For the US, 12pm-3pm (EST), 9am-12pm (PST). Etc...

I think the US goes on Daylight Savings Time next weekend though, so they have to add an hour.

Would this time work for anyone?

Also, can we use the same chat room as before? Or do they have to be created repeatedly?

Works for me.

https://fairmeeting.net/alinuxmusiciansvideomeeting chatroom remains open

For a start I'd suggest
#1 weekly schedule.
#2 maybe some kind of notifier bot thingy to supplement notifications from this thread.
#3 an option to chip in on an open agenda for the meeting, for instance to....
catch up on a recent thread here
showcase a specific usecase or system
share some music
etc.

For now, let's stick with a single meeting and see how many people show up.. ;)
I won't be available for an entire 3-hour period but if anyone has a preference for Saturday or Sunday, I'm flexible.
Who is interested in meeting this weekend?

I wouldn't be a huge fan of promoting a closed service such as Discord TBQH. What would be the advantage over an open channel in https://fairmeeting.net/alinuxmusiciansvideomeeting ? I guess it's more convenient when you're already also in other Discover channels?

For now, let's meet using fairmeeting... just to get the ball rolling. Then we can talk about it further. The important thing is to hook up! :)

The time has come my little friends
To talk of other things
Of shoes and ships and ceiling wax
Of cabbagges and kings.
