Wiki

Post by raboof »

We've talked about a wiki before, but it doesn't have its own thread yet it seems.

I think it'd be a good idea if we use the forum mostly for discussion, and condense the conclusions/solutions (if any) to a wiki for future reference.

One way would be to start our own wiki, another possibility would be hooking up to some existing wiki and forming some sort of partnership, starting a 'linuxmusicians corner' or something.

Candidates, imho, would be non-distro-specific linux wiki's and musicians wiki's.

Options:
- Musicians wiki's:
-- http://sound.wikia.com , might be a bit too biased to sound production
- Linux wiki's:
-- http://wiki.linuxquestions.org , but it seems rather ad-ridden to me.
-- http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Main_Page , might be a bit too biased towards alsa
-- http://apps.linuxaudio.org , seems to be of somewhat more limited scope

For now, I think I'd prefer an own wiki to any of the above.

the french-speaking www.linuxmao.org is a great WIKI-like place for linux DAW related topics. I think someone from linuxmao recently showed up here. To follow up ...

another interesting french-speaking place is the "venerable" www.audiofanzine.org. I got thousands of tips about hardware, their user driven database is HUUUUGE. There aren't only hardware tips, there are tons of tutorials of all kinds. This is not linux related as such, but generic studio activities oriented.

Yes great site, I mailed Nathan about it and the people of the site did leave a question for coorporation on this site:
I would be nice if some of there howto could be translated to english :)
Would be great too, to have some translated in for example dutch

Right now I'm looking at mostly at Doku wiki, due to ease of use and ABC music plugins.

The 'wikitex' extension for mediawiki looks cool, too: it allows lilypond code in the wiki pages: http://wikitex.org/

mediawiki has the advantage of being very widely used, which means online support will hopefully be and remain good, plugins will be available for desirable features and users will recognise it and feel familiar.

jep - its main focus seems to be mysql, though there appears to be support for postgresql also.

Okay. I like MediaWIki a lot...Doku wiki looks like it might be easier to maintain, though, so I'm debating. I may do a couple test installations locally this coming week to just see how everything works and stuff.

I'm half-heartedly putting lilypond scores into a wiki so people
can collaborate on score development. See
http://www.blackstock.ca/egroupware/sit ... _name=wiki

I can't decide which one of two approaches is better for collaborative
development of scores: a wiki or a concurrent versioning system.
What I have in mind is several people working on some particlular
score - say, I work on the guitar part, you on the violin part, somebody
else works on phrase markings and so on.

I'm leaning toward wiki for reasons you mentioned below - lots
of people know how to use it already and the wikitex thing is
welcome good news. Not sure how many people want to learn
how to check in and out CVS stuff.

The wiki at the above URL is pretty basic and needs to be
replaced - though I'm in no hurry I'm the only one using it ;)

Any thoughts?

PS what happened to the news feed demo?

@ mike_blackstock : great that you're still working on it :) I'll see where it will end... and if it's gonna work...

It would be good if there's also a wysiwyg way to contribute to the scores.. but I think nted or Rosegarden can give a solution for this...

Frankly, I never understood why this is an either-or question: why couldn't we have a web-based CVS/SVN frontend that, for all practical purposes, looks and feels like a wiki? 'wiki people' could use that, and those more comfortable with their own favourite CVS/SVN clients would be happy, too.

The fact that none of the popular wiki softwares work like this seems to suggest this is not an option in practice, but I don't see why :).

It's still here ;) - or are you referring to something else?
