Single instance Qtractor MIDI editor window

Post by d.healey »

Is there a setting in Qtractor to use just 1 MID editor window for all clips? I keep getting confused by all my MIDI editor windows along the task bar. Also is there a way to dock the MIDI editor to the main window?

Thanks

In my OS (using JWM window manager) I can select an option to group all windows.
So, if I have multiple Rox filer windows opened, there's only one single button on the task bar.
This works also for Qtractor.
No matter how many Windows I open in Qtractor (Main WIndow, Editor Windows, PlugIns etc.) there's only one single button on the task bar.

Your WM/Desktop environment doesn't have such an option?

It does, but I don't use it. It wouldn't solve the problem for me, I'd still prefer to have a single editor I can use for all MIDI clips. I can't think of a reason I'd want two open at once except on perhaps some rare occassion when I want to copy data between clips.

@TAERSH Do you ever work with a MIDI editor open on a second monitor or desktop? How do you cope when you have lots (10+) midi clips you want to quickly switch between?

At times when I was using two monitors I opened/moved all editor windows to the 2nd monitor - always.
But at these times I didn't know about the "group" option of my window manager. Nowadays I have a huge flat-screen monitor.

However, my OS has ten desktops. Each one of them is configured for special tasks like: Audio, Office, Internet, Video etc.
I switch them by keyboard shortcuts and each desktop has its own icon setup related to the desktop's tasks/use.

When I have multiple midi editor windows opened, I right-click the grouped button on the taskbar and choose the needed window from a list presented after right-clicking.

For my workflow this is comfortable for my needs.

Is there a way to set the default midi editor size and window position?

Never heard of it before but it looks useful. I shall do some reading, thanks!

Not a definitive solution, but if there aren't other solutions (in theory is your WM that should do this) you can bind a keyboard shortcut to resize and position the selected window or windows matching some pattern you define.

they are supposed to be stored on a per session file basis ie. restored to position and size as when the session was last saved (if the editor was ever open for that clip before).

Yes that works, but the first time I open a clip's editor in my project it's a small window in the middle of the screen. I have 21 tracks each with 1 midi clip, so I have to resize 21 windows! I'm glad I only have 1 clip per track.

I'd like to define a default position for midi editors the first time they are opened (of course what I really want is a single MIDI editor for all clips  )
