qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
Hi all,
Ive been messing around with qmidiarp and on occassion, I've actually managed to get some sounds coming out :p
Only...not today.
I have my controller/arp/yosh setup as so:
MIDI TAB (Connections)
keyboard-->a2j(through)-->qmidiarp(in)
qmidiarp(out)-->yoshimi(in)
AUDIO TAB
Yoshimi (left/right) --> Playback_1/Playback_2
...then I set up an LFO pattern, set the channel to 1 (same as in Yoshimi), and then.....nothing.
I've clearly got something set up wrong, but I just can't work out what.

Re: qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
Why are you using a2j?
Qmidiarp works with ALSA and so does Yoshimi.
Presumably your keyboard in MIDI over USB.
Are the keyboard, qmidiarp and yoshimi *actually* connected? qjackctl provides a user-friendly way to check this (and make the connections too).
To check Yoshimi itself, open it's virtual keyboard and make sure you are getting sound that way.

Hi.
I'm using a2j as I want to be able to sync it later with Ardour etc...
The keyboard directly to Yoshimi produces sound, as does the virtual keyboard.
The connections in qjackctl are where I set the connections - they are connected as described.

Re: qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
So is qmidiarp sending jack midi rather than alsa midi?
If so, you need to make sure Yoshimi is set for this as well.
Yoshimi->Settings->Jack->Set as preferred MIDI

Re: qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
Well I've just set that up here, and run one of the example arps with no problems. At the risk of stating the obvious, you did click on the arps 'run' button, didn't you?

Re: qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
Ha. Yes, I did :p
It runs, makes all the right motions on screen - just nothing comes out.

Re: qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
Hmm, I'm fast running out of ideas
In settings, set send reports to console.
then in the midi section, enable Log incoming events
Do you see any messages?
Also on qmidiarp enable passing unrecognised commands through (can't remember the exact wording).
as well as notes, try changing some controllers and see if anything gets reported.

Re: qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
Here's a pic of connection qmidiarp to yoshimi:
You might want to try Patroneo pattern-based seq,
fill in a grid and customize things visually.
Used it with Yoshimi just last night. Part of Laborejo project.
Cheers

Hi. Thanks for that.
That is exactly the setup that I have.
...and still nothing. Sound from everything else (including Yoshimi with midi controller and/or virtual keys).
I'll give Patroneoa try - thank you.
EDIT: Patroneoa doesn't appear to support Jack. It syncs to jack (i.e. matches the tempo. but doesn't show in the connections window).

Hi. thanks for that. I'm not seeing Patroneo in the connections tab at all.
However, I found when launching from the terminal that it says:
"calfbox python module is not in sys.modules."
I've googled and it seems that a python module is missing in sys.modules, and that the programmer is supposed to import from somewhere etc....I'm not a python developer, so it all got a little tricky.
I'm having all kinds of issues outside of "normal usage" so-to-speak. Ardour works as expected, as does Hydrogen and Yoshimi, the calf plugins etc... but anything I download doesn't seem to work.
I just tried to install "Surge", which went fine...installed with no errors, but Carla and/or Ardour don't see it at all.
Something is not quite right with my install maybe?
EDIT: Just for completeness, here's an image of my setup with qmidiarp:

Re: qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
When things are weird, I suggest making a fresh test install, it can be on an sd card-reader,
usbstick/drive etc. I would take advantage of the expertise present AVLinux or
Ubuntu Studio, enable KX Studio Repository, and apply the latest updates.
That will give you a solid base from which to test, that others can relate to with some certainty.
Cheers

Re: qmidiarp-->Yoshimi
Hi again.
I have set it up exactly as you have in the screen shot - still nothing.
Everything else is working as expected (all the synths eventually showed up - I was just impatient and expected "refresh" to list them).
I'm using Ubuntu Studio 20.04.1 LTS.
You don't think that the build for this distro is just, well, broken, do you?
