Ok. I've come to the conclusion that qmidiarp is broken, sadly,

Ive tried it on my old laptop running Ubuntu Studio 18.04 - and it works fine. I booted to a USB key on 20.04 and I have no sound (or signal perhaps, to any synths).

All other synths work, and I all routing from controllers, through Ardour, Hydrogen, Carla etc... all work as you'd expect - just not qmidiarp.

So, fair enough, these things happen.

I then set about reinstalling Patroneo - but there are so many missing dependencies that I've spent hours already struggling to get it compiled, so I think that's a no-no for me as well.

Are there any others that I've missed?

Do you have it set to use the jack clock or freewheeling?

I have noticed that Ubuntu 19.10 handles midi differently than 20.04.
Some things work in one, but not the other, with identical settings
in qjackctl, and /etc/security/limits.conf ...so

The Patroneo screenshot was 19.10, the qmidiarp shot is 20.04
both kept fully updated. In my attempts to live free of mac/win duopoly,
I've found it necessary (and not too difficult) to have several different
linux setups readily available.

Wine allows windows freewares like Dualism, BlueArp and Drumburst to
be wrapped by Tone2's NanoHost, and connected to linux instruments like Yoshimi,
Hydrogen and AMsynth, that are available as standalones. Much more fun,
and far greater potential than old software with little or no support.
Dos centavos.

Dualism has two 16 step arps, with them latched, and all 32 slots activated,
and different playback settings on each, you can for example, record with Timemachine,
use Yoshimi with five active sounds,
nd vary the combos of the sounds as you vary the speed, octaves, and
playback direction in Dualism. So you can enhance your keyboard skillz
(or even produce cool music without them) by playing arp options
and yoshimi selections.

Once you have some things you like, you can edit out the dogs
and rough patches with audacity. Cross-fading tracks in audacity
is an easy way to blend parts full of ambient backdrops that don't
edit cleany based on beats.

Speaking of which, you can 'play' Hydrogen at the same time,
and come up with some excellent combos from which to build on.\
Drumburst is it's own drum0machine, but has a mid-out option,
and as a wrapped standalone, can play linux instruments with it's
own sounds off, or blended. (They presets are loud, when selected,
so be for-warned

BlueArp is a long running and popular arp project, with many youtube videos
to scrutinize.
Cheers

To be honest, I love Ardour/Hydrogen and these have done me proud for a while.

I didn't really want to start messing about with Wine if I could help it, preferring to use Linux native programs, but I'll give some of those a go.

I might even have a stab at writing an ARP myself - the only part I think I would struggle with is talking to Jack.
