Midi Drum Patterns

Post by TygerTung »

Where to get these? I was looking for some generic midi drum patterns for electronic music, and I would have thought that the internet would have been thick with them for standard genres such as trance, drum and bass, jungle etc, but they seem pretty rare for some reason?

Do most people just programme their own? I'm brass musician by training, so drum patterns are not really my forte.

I would have thought they'd be easy to get. There seems to be no end of sample loops for cash, but not free midi patterns. Maybe there needs to be a midi drum pattern library.

I mean if one wanted drum samples they could just record a drum kit, or hit pieces of plywood with a mallet to get a bass drum sounds, clap hands for a clappy type sound etc.

Cheers,

Sam

I just had a quick search for free patterns and got a number of hits. Most of them wanted a membership signup or email address so were introductions to commercial products. One that didn't is https://www.musicgateway.com/blog/how-t ... using-them and I downloaded a package of patterns but didn't try any yet.

I did download that one ages ago, but there is only about three patterns in the "Dance" section and none of them are trance type patterns.

I guess I will have to sign up to those websites who want a sign up and an introduction to commercial products.

I guess there might be an opening for a midi drum pattern library. Could have various genres, and different song sections such as openings, fills, buildups, endings etc.

Maybe we could have a web-page on the forum or linked to the forum somehow, in the spirit of sharing which the Linux philosophy seems to be all about.

Use a disposable email address.

You have started this topic already, may as well post links here when you find them.

And if anyone writes some patterns, could post them up on this thread.

Does not actually have 800k patterns but it's a good start.

Good find. There are so many it might be more efficient to actually learn how to make patterns than to sort through them. I downloaded the 1GB of midi song files linked in the same post as well.

Holy moses, that is so huge that perfectionist will spend few years to checking 'where is best groove for this track'!

From what I can tell, there's a few hundred grooves in there, and no, I don't think you'll spend ages digging for the right groove. You already know the genre of your track, which gives you the basic feel, and you know whether it's a triplet based groove or straight 16ths, so that makes it so you have about 8-10 drum grooves in rock and jazz, and 4-6 in all the other genres.

Oh yeah, maybe you did not look properly, check number of subdirs

Code: Select all

tavasti@hermo:~/Downloads/drummidi/800000_Drum_Percussion_MIDI_Archive[6_19_15]$ find . -type d | grep -i rock | wc
   3215 32588 278326
tavasti@hermo:~/Downloads/drummidi/800000_Drum_Percussion_MIDI_Archive[6_19_15]$ find . -type d | grep -i blues | wc
    781 8450 62279
tavasti@hermo:~/Downloads/drummidi/800000_Drum_Percussion_MIDI_Archive[6_19_15]$ find . -type d | grep -i metal | wc
   4262 42830 429740
Hint: GM MIDI Pack, Studio Drummer MIDI Files, Superior Drummer 2 Drum Midi have plenty of stuff. That package is huge, to check it out extensively will take time. I am not sure will I do it :-)

That's odd ... Could you pm me a dropbox/gdrive link of your zip file? Mine from the exact same link was a fraction of that many files.
