MIDI sequencer with piano roll and audio export function

Postby tuzzo » Mon Nov 26, 2018 2:03 pm

Hello,

I'd like to know if there is any midi sequencer with a Piano Roll view where i can connect external synths (like Yoshimi, Qsynth, etc.) and draw notes or record them with a midi keyboard, and then export the result as an audio file.
At the moment i use LMMS to do this, but i would like to know if there are different ways to do this.

Thank you

Possibly Modular:
for MIDI sequencer: seq64 https://github.com/sauraen/seq64, keyboard: jack-keyboard http://jack-keyboard.sourceforge.net/. You load the instruments in for example Carla, Lmms, ... and Ardour also for instruments and for sound recording and editing?

Adding Giada, although this is more of a looper than a fully fledged sequencer: https://www.giadamusic.com/
btw, that seq64 project is misleading, the successor of seq24 is actually sequencer64 https://github.com/ahlstromcj/sequencer64

AriaMaestosa is simple and handy for small projects.

if using external MIDI instruments (soft-synths) you cannot "export" the audio from a(ny) MIDI sequencer: you may only record (bounce) the instrument's audio output onto some other program or into the same MIDI sequencer if it has audio recording capabilities (eg. qtractor, ardour, muse, etc.).

the "audio export" function may only make sense on non-modular/instrument-plugins scenario where all processing, MIDI playback and audio rendering is internal to given host sequencer or DAW: again, qtractor, ardour, muse, etc. also fits the bill here.

As someone who primarily works with MIDI, I'd strongly recommend looking at Qtractor. I've explored all of the popular free software sequencers and am convinced they all suck (some less) for various reasons.

MusE-Sequencer is by far my favorite MIDI sequencer. Using a pencil ("d" key) tool makes it easy to create a clip. By default, MusE opens up a notation editor, so if you go into preferences, you can change the default double-click to Piano Roll editor. You can right-click and choose "Piano Roll" from the list and that will open up the editor. Then, you can use the "d" key to draw notes.

Qtractor and MusE Sequencer both focuses in different workflows and I prefer MusE better. It comes down to how comfortable you are with the MIDI sequencer of your choice.

Note, however, there does not seem to be any development of MusE Sequencer in the news section of the website.

I tried the piano roll editor in Ardour, but I prefer a separate window for the piano roll rather than an in-place editor in Ardour, so Ardour's workflow does not suit me well.

I once tried Rosegarden in the past, but it's not as simple as compared to MusE when it comes to JACK-MIDI selection. I don't know what changes Rosegarden has made since I last tried it, but for me, MusE is what I used to create three songs:

After I'm done with MusE, I bounce one (or multiple) tracks into a single audio track in Ardour and I then work using Harrison Mixbus. Recording audio using Mixbus causes xruns, so I used Ardour for recording and Mixbus for mixing. What causes xruns in Mixbus comes down to EQ and compressor per track. In my experience, EQ and compressor cannot be disabled before recording happens.

Music Interest: New Age w/ a mix of modern smooth jazz, light techno/trance & downtempo -- something Epcot Future World/Tomorrowland-flavored.

Indeed, slow news year ;)
Releases of MusE tend to happen a bit too infrequently... but there's been quite some work if you check the forum and github. At the moment MusE is best installed from git (the plugin cache makes it a lot more stable during startup).
