Don't know if Ardour has the same, but Reaper has a configurable timestamped autosave too. Maybe worth investigating.

Ardour does as well but sometimes it just doesn't work, I don't know if there is some kind of corruption but when this happens it's like it doesn't write anything.

Does it crash immediately then? I had Ardour crashing e.g. while editing midi notes .... so it's not possible to tell if it's due to some plugin or not.

No, it's random as far as I can tell, never found a cause or pattern, it just vanishes in the middle of doing something.

Yup... exactly my experience. I started a thread about problematic plugins in Ardour in the forum these days, but it got deleted, because it doesn't help to solve problems.
